1. Exhibitions or grants (or both) may be awarded from <strong>the</strong>se Funds to candidates for <strong>the</strong> B.A.<br />

Degree needing assistance who have shown pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in <strong>the</strong>ir studies and who are recommended by<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir Tutors, provided that, if <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>of</strong> standing for admission but have not been admitted to that<br />

degree, <strong>the</strong>y are pursuing fur<strong>the</strong>r study in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> to <strong>the</strong> satisfaction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Awarders for <strong>the</strong><br />

time being.<br />

2. The annual value <strong>of</strong> an Exhibition shall be such sum as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Awarders in<br />

a particular case within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council payable in equal instalments<br />

at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> each term kept till <strong>the</strong> student is <strong>of</strong> standing for admission to <strong>the</strong> B.A. Degree. If <strong>the</strong><br />

Awarders agree to continue an Exhibition after <strong>the</strong> holder has attained such standing, or if a Student<br />

is elected after attaining such standing, he or she shall receive a payment in respect <strong>of</strong> each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

next three terms kept or allowed, provided that no payment shall be made in respect <strong>of</strong> any term after<br />

<strong>the</strong> academical year following that in which an Exhibitioner became <strong>of</strong> standing for admission to <strong>the</strong><br />

B.A. Degree. The Awarders may determine that <strong>the</strong> tenure <strong>of</strong> an Exhibition shall date from <strong>the</strong><br />

beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academical year in which <strong>the</strong> award is made. The value <strong>of</strong> a grant shall be determined<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Awarders within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

3. Payment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhibition shall be discontinued if <strong>the</strong> Awarders for <strong>the</strong> time being consider<br />

discontinuance desirable on account <strong>of</strong> a change in <strong>the</strong> financial circumstances <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> student.<br />

4. The Awarders for <strong>the</strong> time being shall have power to deprive an Exhibitioner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> title and<br />

emoluments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhibition for misconduct or for failure in industry or progress.<br />

5. The Awarders shall be <strong>the</strong> Vice-Chancellor (or a duly appointed deputy) and four members <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Senate appointed by <strong>the</strong> Council in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term to serve for two years from 1 January<br />

following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment. Before <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lent Term in each year <strong>the</strong> Awarders shall<br />

elect one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves to act as <strong>the</strong>ir Secretary.<br />

6. Applications shall be made to <strong>the</strong> Secretary through Tutors before <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> each term. A<br />

Tutor shall furnish (a) a certificate that <strong>the</strong> applicant is a candidate for <strong>the</strong> B.A. Degree, (b) particulars<br />

as to <strong>the</strong> financial circumstances upon which <strong>the</strong> application is based, (c) a statement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> applicant’s<br />

performance in his or her studies, (d) any particulars entitling <strong>the</strong> applicant to preference under Statute<br />

E, II. The Tutor shall also undertake to inform <strong>the</strong> Secretary for <strong>the</strong> time being <strong>of</strong> any substantial<br />

change in <strong>the</strong> financial circumstances <strong>of</strong> an applicant to whom an Exhibition is awarded.<br />

7. Awards shall be made as soon as convenient after <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> each term.<br />

8. The Secretary shall be paid such sum as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Council, on <strong>the</strong> recommendation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Awarders, which shall be charged on <strong>the</strong> Funds in such manner as <strong>the</strong> Treasurer may determine.<br />

9. Any part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Funds that is not expended in any year in accordance with<br />

<strong>the</strong> foregoing regulations shall be available for distribution on <strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Awarders in<br />

equal shares to Fitzwilliam College and to Murray Edwards College for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> defraying <strong>the</strong><br />

cost <strong>of</strong> awards made to members <strong>of</strong> those institutions who are candidates for <strong>the</strong> B.A. Degree and who<br />

are in need <strong>of</strong> financial assistance upon such conditions as <strong>the</strong>ir respective governing bodies shall from<br />

time to time determine.<br />

BENDALL SANSKRIT EXHIBITION<br />

1. An Exhibition, called <strong>the</strong> Bendall Sanskrit Exhibition, shall be <strong>of</strong>fered for competition in each<br />

year.<br />

2. Any member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, not being a Graduate Student, may be a candidate for first election<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Exhibition if at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award twelve complete terms will not have passed since his or<br />

her first term <strong>of</strong> residence, or if he or she will still be qualified to be a candidate for <strong>the</strong> Oriental<br />

Studies Tripos in <strong>the</strong> term <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award. Preference will be given to candidates who have obtained<br />

honours in <strong>the</strong> Classical Tripos, or who before <strong>the</strong> last date <strong>of</strong> entry for <strong>the</strong> Exhibition have been<br />

certified to <strong>the</strong> Registrary by <strong>the</strong> Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Asian and Middle Eastern Studies<br />

to possess a competent knowledge <strong>of</strong> Latin and Greek or <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> those languages.<br />

3. Anyone to whom <strong>the</strong> Exhibition has been awarded may compete again if still a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> and not a Graduate Student, and if at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award fifteen complete terms will not<br />
