(b) <strong>the</strong>y have resided in <strong>Cambridge</strong> for not less than sixty days during <strong>the</strong> twelve months preceding<br />

<strong>the</strong> day on or before which dissertations are to be submitted.<br />

5. No candidate who has already been awarded <strong>the</strong> Prize or part <strong>of</strong> it shall compete again.<br />

6. Each candidate shall submit <strong>the</strong> title <strong>of</strong> his or her proposed report, toge<strong>the</strong>r with a statement <strong>of</strong><br />

its scope in not more than 300 words, to <strong>the</strong> Registrary not later than 15 September. The Registrary<br />

shall submit that information to <strong>the</strong> Secretaries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Boards <strong>of</strong> Engineering and <strong>of</strong> Physics<br />

and Chemistry. Reports, which must be printed or typewritten, shall be submitted in duplicate to <strong>the</strong><br />

Registrary not later than 31 October. Candidates may incorporate in <strong>the</strong>ir reports material already<br />

published, provided that <strong>the</strong> work was done in <strong>Cambridge</strong>, but <strong>the</strong>y are expected to submit a connected<br />

account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir complete investigations.<br />

7. The Examiners shall be two persons appointed by <strong>the</strong> General Board before <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Michaelmas Term, one on <strong>the</strong> nomination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Engineering and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r on <strong>the</strong><br />

nomination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Physics and Chemistry. The award <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be made not<br />

later than <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong> Full Lent Term. Each Examiner shall receive from <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund,<br />

unless no report is sent in, such sum as shall be determined jointly by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Boards <strong>of</strong> Engineering<br />

and <strong>of</strong> Physics and Chemistry within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

8. The Prize may be awarded for a report submitted jointly by two candidates giving an account <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> research which <strong>the</strong>y have carried out in co-operation. In comparing <strong>the</strong> merits <strong>of</strong> combined and<br />

independent work, <strong>the</strong> Examiners shall expect an appreciably higher standard for <strong>the</strong> former. In <strong>the</strong><br />

case <strong>of</strong> an award made for a joint report, <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be divided equally between <strong>the</strong> two co-authors.<br />

9. Each prize-winner shall present a copy <strong>of</strong> his or her report to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> Library.<br />

10. The <strong>University</strong> shall have power to alter and amend <strong>the</strong>se regulations from time to time by<br />

Grace, on <strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Boards <strong>of</strong> Engineering and <strong>of</strong> Physics and Chemistry,<br />

provided that <strong>the</strong> Prize shall always be associated with <strong>the</strong> four names mentioned in Regulation 1 and<br />

shall be devoted to <strong>the</strong> encouragement <strong>of</strong> radio research.<br />

HARE PRIZE<br />

1. The Hare Prize shall be <strong>of</strong>fered annually for a dissertation on a subject, proposed by <strong>the</strong> candidate<br />

and approved by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Classics, which falls within <strong>the</strong> scope <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Classics.<br />

2. The Prize shall be awarded by not more than three Adjudicators, who shall be appointed by <strong>the</strong><br />

General Board on <strong>the</strong> nomination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Classics not later than <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Easter Term. Each Adjudicator shall receive from <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund such sum as shall be<br />

determined by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Classics within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

3. The Prize shall be open to any member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> who has been approved by <strong>the</strong> Board<br />

<strong>of</strong> Graduate Studies for <strong>the</strong> award <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ph.D. Degree during <strong>the</strong> calendar year next preceding <strong>the</strong><br />

year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award.<br />

4. Not later than <strong>the</strong> fifth day <strong>of</strong> Full Lent Term, a candidate shall notify <strong>the</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty<br />

Board <strong>of</strong> Classics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> title <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dissertation that he or she proposes to submit. The Secretary <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Faculty Board shall inform candidates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> approval or rejection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir titles. Candidates whose<br />

titles have been approved shall send <strong>the</strong>ir dissertations to <strong>the</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board so as to<br />

arrive not later than <strong>the</strong> last day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lent Term. A dissertation shall not exceed 80,000 words in<br />

length.<br />

5. The Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Classics shall select not more than three dissertations from among those<br />

submitted under Regulation 4, and shall refer <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong> Adjudicators. The award shall be made not<br />

later than <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ensuing Michaelmas Term.<br />

6. The value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be <strong>the</strong> annual income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund, after payments have been made<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Adjudicators.<br />

7. The successful candidate shall deposit a copy <strong>of</strong> his or her dissertation in <strong>the</strong> Library <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Faculty <strong>of</strong> Classics.<br />

8. If in any year <strong>the</strong> Prize is not awarded, <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize for that year shall be added to<br />

<strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />
