Proviso.<br />

5. Subject to Regulation 3, <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lecture and <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> its delivery shall be fixed by <strong>the</strong><br />

Vice-Chancellor.<br />

6. The stipend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lecturer shall be <strong>the</strong> aggregate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> endowment fund for <strong>the</strong><br />

financial year in which <strong>the</strong> lecture is given and that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year immediately preceding it, less any<br />

expenses associated with <strong>the</strong> lecture.<br />

7. These regulations shall be subject to alteration by Grace provided that <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Leslie Stephen<br />

be always connected with <strong>the</strong> foundation and that <strong>the</strong> income arising <strong>the</strong>refrom be appropriated to<br />

some academical object <strong>of</strong> a literary character.<br />

STEVENSON PRIZES<br />

1. The sum <strong>of</strong> £2,000 bequea<strong>the</strong>d to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by <strong>the</strong> late Claude Maberly Stevenson, M.D.,<br />

<strong>of</strong> St John’s College, shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> Stevenson Fund, for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> providing one<br />

or more annual postgraduate prizes in Economics which shall be called Stevenson Prizes.<br />

2. At least one and no more than four Stevenson Prizes shall be awarded each year by <strong>the</strong> Degree<br />

Committee for <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Economics for distinction shown by candidates in <strong>the</strong> examination for<br />

<strong>the</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Philosophy in Economics.<br />

3. The value <strong>of</strong> a Prize shall be such sum as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Economics<br />

within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

4. In awarding <strong>the</strong> Prizes <strong>the</strong> Degree Committee shall be governed chiefly by <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work<br />

done, and shall have regard to <strong>the</strong> candidates’ constructive ability and <strong>the</strong>ir grasp <strong>of</strong> scientific principles<br />

ra<strong>the</strong>r than to <strong>the</strong> erudition displayed.<br />

5. After provision has been made, in accordance with <strong>the</strong> foregoing regulations, for <strong>the</strong> award <strong>of</strong><br />

Stevenson Prizes, <strong>the</strong> balance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> annual income and any unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong><br />

Fund shall be available to <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Economics to be used for <strong>the</strong> encouragement <strong>of</strong> study<br />

or research in Economics.<br />

6. It shall be open to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, on <strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Economics,<br />

to alter <strong>the</strong>se regulations from time to time provided that<br />

(a) any Prize provided from <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be entitled a Stevenson Prize;<br />

(b) at least one Stevenson Prize shall be <strong>of</strong>fered annually as a postgraduate prize in Economics.<br />

THE JOHN STEWART OF RANNOCH H EBREW FUND AND SCHOLARSHIPS<br />

Endowments, 1904, p. 335<br />

1. The John Stewart <strong>of</strong> Rannoch Hebrew Fund shall be managed by <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Middle Eastern Studies in consultation with and with <strong>the</strong> agreement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> teaching <strong>of</strong>ficers in Hebrew<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Department.<br />

2. The first charge on <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be provision, if <strong>the</strong>re are candidates <strong>of</strong> sufficient<br />

merit, for <strong>the</strong> award in each year <strong>of</strong> at least two Scholarships in Hebrew. The Scholarships shall be<br />

awarded on <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> a competitive examination.<br />

3. The examination shall consist <strong>of</strong> three papers namely (a) passages from specified books <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Old Testament for translation from Hebrew into English and questions arising out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> passages set;<br />

(b) passages from unspecified books <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Old Testament for translation from Hebrew into English<br />

and questions arising out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> passages set, and passages for pointing; (c) passages for translation<br />

from English into Hebrew, toge<strong>the</strong>r with questions on grammar and syntax. The specified books shall<br />

be selected from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Asian and Middle Eastern Studies.<br />

4. The examination shall begin on <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong> Full Easter Term.<br />

5. Candidature shall be open to any student resident in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, provided that at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> examination not more than nine complete terms will have passed after his or her first term <strong>of</strong><br />

residence. The names <strong>of</strong> candidates shall be sent to <strong>the</strong> Registrary so as to arrive not later than<br />

25 January preceding <strong>the</strong> examination. A student who wishes to claim preference under Regulation 7<br />

shall submit at <strong>the</strong> same time a certificate <strong>of</strong> his or her place <strong>of</strong> birth.<br />

6. The examination shall be conducted by two Examiners appointed not later than <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Lent Term on <strong>the</strong> nomination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers. Each Examiner shall receive from <strong>the</strong> Fund, unless<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are no candidates, such amount as may be determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers within a range approved
