11. The Managers shall at <strong>the</strong>ir discretion elect into Studentships those candidates intending to<br />

engage in research in law whom <strong>the</strong>y consider to show outstanding merit or promise. They may require<br />

candidates to attend for interview. If in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers two or more candidates show<br />

equal merit, preference as prescribed in Statute E, XLIII, 2(b) shall be given to <strong>the</strong> Founder’s kin and<br />

to candidates born within <strong>the</strong> parish <strong>of</strong> St Mary Newington, London. The Managers shall announce<br />

elections not later than 30 September. Election to and tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholarship shall lapse if <strong>the</strong> person<br />

elected does not become or ceases to be a registered Graduate Student.<br />

12. The value <strong>of</strong> a Studentship shall be such sum, within a range approved from time to time by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Council, as <strong>the</strong> Managers may determine in each particular case after taking into account any o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

financial resources that may be available to <strong>the</strong> Student.<br />

13. The tenure <strong>of</strong> a Studentship shall begin on 1 October and shall be for one year in <strong>the</strong> first<br />

instance. The Managers may re-elect a Student for one or two years, but for no longer. At any reelection<br />

<strong>the</strong> Managers may vary <strong>the</strong> emolument <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Student.<br />

14. An application for a grant from <strong>the</strong> Fund may be made at any time on grounds <strong>of</strong> financial<br />

hardship by a Scholar or a Postgraduate Student or by any o<strong>the</strong>r person who is qualified under Statute<br />

E, XLIII, 3. Such an application shall be made on a form which may be obtained from <strong>the</strong> Secretary<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Law and which must be completed and returned to <strong>the</strong> Secretary through <strong>the</strong><br />

applicant’s Tutor. The value <strong>of</strong> a grant shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers for each particular<br />

applicant, subject to an upper limit to be determined from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

WILLIAM BARCLAY SQUIRE FUND<br />

1. The sums given to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by Mrs J. A. Fuller-Maitland and Mrs F. L. Nicholson in<br />

memory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir bro<strong>the</strong>r William Barclay Squire shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> William Barclay Squire<br />

Fund <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> which shall be used to fur<strong>the</strong>r antiquarian research in music by <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong><br />

annual prizes to be called <strong>the</strong> William Barclay Squire Prize and <strong>the</strong> William Barclay Squire Essay<br />

Prize, and <strong>of</strong> grants to Graduate Students.<br />

2. Any unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong> Fund may be applied from time to time by <strong>the</strong><br />

Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Music and subject to such conditions as <strong>the</strong>y may think fit for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong><br />

fur<strong>the</strong>ring research in <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> music.<br />

William Barclay Squire Prize<br />

3. The Prize shall be awarded each year by <strong>the</strong> Examiners for Part II <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Music Tripos to a<br />

candidate who has shown distinction in any two papers which in <strong>the</strong> judgement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Examiners are<br />

to be regarded as on subjects in <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> music.<br />

4. The value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be such sum as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Music<br />

within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

William Barclay Squire Essay Prize<br />

5. The William Barclay Squire Essay Prize shall be awarded for <strong>the</strong> best course-work essay and/or<br />

dissertation in <strong>the</strong> examination for <strong>the</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Philosophy (one-year course) which, in <strong>the</strong><br />

judgement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Degree Committee for <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Music, is on a subject connected with <strong>the</strong><br />

history <strong>of</strong> music.<br />

6. The Prize shall be open to any registered Graduate Student under <strong>the</strong> supervision <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Degree<br />

Committee for <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Music.<br />

7. The value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be such sum as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Music<br />

within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

Grants to Graduate Students<br />

8. In any year, after provision has been made for <strong>the</strong> award <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> William Barclay Squire Prize<br />

and <strong>the</strong> William Barclay Squire Essay Prize, <strong>the</strong> Degree Committee for <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Music may<br />

make grants from <strong>the</strong> annual income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund towards <strong>the</strong> expenses <strong>of</strong> Graduate Students under<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir supervision who are pursuing or about to pursue research on topics in <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> music.<br />
