be eligible for re-election on not more than two occasions; a Tiarks Bursar shall be eligible for reelection<br />
on not more than one occasion.<br />
7. The stipend <strong>of</strong> a Tiarks German Scholarship or a Tiarks Bursary shall be such sum within a<br />
range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Electors in each case<br />
after taking account <strong>of</strong> any o<strong>the</strong>r financial resources that may be available to <strong>the</strong> holder; provided that<br />
<strong>the</strong> maximum value <strong>of</strong> a Scholarship shall be greater than <strong>the</strong> maximum value <strong>of</strong> a Bursary. The<br />
stipend shall be paid in two half-yearly instalments in advance, provided that <strong>the</strong> Electors may withhold<br />
<strong>the</strong> second instalment if <strong>the</strong>y are not satisfied that a Scholar or Bursar has been pursuing his or her<br />
studies with sufficient diligence.<br />
8. Any income accumulated in <strong>the</strong> Fund may be applied at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Electors<br />
(a) for <strong>the</strong> award <strong>of</strong> grants to Tiarks Scholars and Bursars;<br />
(b) for <strong>the</strong> award <strong>of</strong> grants to o<strong>the</strong>r persons engaged in study or research in German language or<br />
literature in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, provided that <strong>the</strong>y are not candidates for <strong>the</strong> B.A. Degree;<br />
(c) for <strong>the</strong> encouragement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> German in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by any o<strong>the</strong>r means.<br />
9. These regulations shall be subject to alteration by Grace, provided that <strong>the</strong> first charge on <strong>the</strong><br />
income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall always be <strong>the</strong> maintenance <strong>of</strong> one or more Scholarships for <strong>the</strong> encouragement<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> German in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, to be called <strong>the</strong> Tiarks German Scholarships.<br />

Tiarks Prize<br />
1. The sum made available each year by <strong>the</strong> Electors for <strong>the</strong> Tiarks German Scholarship Fund shall<br />
be used to provide a prize to be called <strong>the</strong> Tiarks Prize.<br />
2. The Prize shall be awarded by <strong>the</strong> Examiners in German for Part IA <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Modern and Medieval<br />
Languages Tripos, for a distinguished performance in German in that examination, to a candidate who<br />
was studying German ab initio.<br />

J. B. TREND FUND<br />
1. The moneys subscribed in response to an appeal for contributions to a fund to commemorate <strong>the</strong><br />
late Pr<strong>of</strong>essor J. B. Trend, Litt.D., <strong>of</strong> Christ’s College, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Spanish, shall form a fund called<br />
<strong>the</strong> J. B. Trend Fund <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> which shall be used to provide grants to enable undergraduates<br />
and registered Graduate Students <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong> to visit Spanish and Portuguese<br />
speaking countries in order to study <strong>the</strong> language, literature, history, or music, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> countries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
choice.<br />
2. The Fund shall be administered by <strong>the</strong> Electors to <strong>the</strong> Gibson Spanish Scholarship.<br />
3. In each year before <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong> Full Easter Term <strong>the</strong> Treasurer shall inform <strong>the</strong> Managers <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> money available in <strong>the</strong> Fund and <strong>the</strong> Managers shall announce <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong> grants.<br />
4. Any candidate for <strong>the</strong> B.A. Degree and any registered Graduate Student shall be eligible to<br />
receive a grant from <strong>the</strong> Fund provided that he or she intends to make use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> grant before<br />
completing <strong>the</strong> examination requirements for <strong>the</strong> B.A. Degree or before submitting a dissertation, as<br />
<strong>the</strong> case may be.<br />
5. An application for a grant accompanied by a short description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> proposed travel must be<br />
submitted through <strong>the</strong> candidate’s Tutor to <strong>the</strong> Registrary so as to arrive not later than a date in Full<br />
Easter Term <strong>of</strong> which notice has been given by <strong>the</strong> Electors in <strong>the</strong> previous Michaelmas Term.<br />
6. Grants shall be awarded not later than <strong>the</strong> last day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Easter Term and shall be payable on<br />
application to <strong>the</strong> Treasurer.<br />

GEORGE MACAULAY TREVELYAN FUND AND LECTURESHIP<br />
1. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> George Macaulay Trevelyan Fund shall be applied to meet <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> lectures<br />
on historical subjects.<br />
2. The first charge on <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> a biennial course <strong>of</strong> lectures<br />
to be called <strong>the</strong> George Macaulay Trevelyan Lectures.<br />
3. A George Macaulay Trevelyan Lecturer shall be appointed in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term <strong>of</strong> each year<br />
<strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> which is even. It shall be <strong>the</strong> duty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lecturer to deliver in English a course <strong>of</strong> not
