LEWIN MEMORIAL FUND<br />

1. The gift <strong>of</strong> Charles Lewin and Mrs Caroline Evans in memory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir fa<strong>the</strong>r, Walpole S. Lewin,<br />

CBE, FRCS, Senior Neurological Surgeon to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, and Fellow <strong>of</strong> Darwin College,<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r with o<strong>the</strong>r sums donated for <strong>the</strong> purpose shall form a fund, called <strong>the</strong> Lewin Memorial Fund,<br />

to provide a biennial Lewin Memorial Lecture.<br />

2. The Lewin Memorial Lecturer shall be appointed by <strong>the</strong> Electors to <strong>the</strong> Lectureship in <strong>the</strong><br />

Michaelmas Term <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academical year in which <strong>the</strong> Lecture is to be given. In appointing <strong>the</strong> Lecturer<br />

<strong>the</strong> Electors shall take into account <strong>the</strong> late W. S. Lewin’s interests in head injuries and medical<br />

education, and any wishes expressed by his children.<br />

3. The Electors shall be <strong>the</strong> Regius Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Physic, <strong>the</strong> Senior Neurological Surgeon to<br />

Addenbrooke’s Hospital, and one person distinguished in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> neurological surgery or <strong>the</strong><br />

neurosciences appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Clinical Medicine for a period <strong>of</strong> four years.<br />

4. The Electors shall be empowered to make arrangements for <strong>the</strong> Lecture and to determine <strong>the</strong><br />

honorarium and expenses to be paid to <strong>the</strong> Lecturer within <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund. Any unspent<br />

income shall be added to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />

LEWIN PRIZE FUND<br />

1. Donations <strong>of</strong> £1,000 from former colleagues <strong>of</strong> Walpole S. Lewin, CBE, FRCS, Senior Neurological<br />

Surgeon to Addenbrooke’s Hospital and Fellow <strong>of</strong> Darwin College, shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> Lewin<br />

Prize Fund for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> awarding a prize in Surgery to candidates for Part II <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Final M.B.<br />

Examination.<br />

2. The title <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prize shall be <strong>the</strong> Lewin Prize in Medicine.<br />

3. The Prize shall be awarded each year to <strong>the</strong> candidate who achieves <strong>the</strong> second highest combined<br />

score in <strong>the</strong> multiple choice, extended matching, and structured-answer components <strong>of</strong> Part II <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Final M.B. Examination held in that academical year.<br />

4. The value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be <strong>the</strong> annual income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />

WILLIAM VAUGHAN LEWIS FUND AND PRIZES<br />

1. The sum subscribed in memory <strong>of</strong> William Vaughan Lewis, Fellow <strong>of</strong> Trinity College and<br />

<strong>University</strong> Lecturer in Geography, who was killed in a motor accident in <strong>the</strong> United States <strong>of</strong> America<br />

on 8 June 1961, shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> William Vaughan Lewis Fund for <strong>the</strong> encouragement <strong>of</strong><br />

study and research in geography.<br />

2. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Geography and three persons<br />

appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Earth Sciences and Geography from among <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Faculty who are not <strong>the</strong>mselves eligible to receive an award under Regulation 4 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se regulations.<br />

The members appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board shall be appointed in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term to serve for<br />

three years from 1 January following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment. No resolution shall be valid unless it is<br />

approved by three <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers.<br />

3. The first charge on <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> one or more William<br />

Vaughan Lewis Prizes, which shall be <strong>of</strong> equal value and which shall be awarded annually to candidates<br />

for Part II <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geographical Tripos who, in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Examiners for that Part, have submitted<br />

outstanding dissertations on some geographical subject. The value <strong>of</strong> a William Vaughan Lewis Prize<br />

shall be such sum not exceeding <strong>the</strong> available income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund as may be determined each year by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Managers, within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

4. After provision has been made for <strong>the</strong> Prize or Prizes in accordance with Regulation 3 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

regulations, <strong>the</strong> remaining income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be at <strong>the</strong> disposal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers to make grants<br />

from time to time as <strong>the</strong>y may think fit for <strong>the</strong> encouragement <strong>of</strong> research in any branch <strong>of</strong> geography.<br />

A grant may be made to any member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> who is <strong>of</strong> not less than one year’s and not<br />

more than ten years’ standing from his or her first degree, whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> this or ano<strong>the</strong>r university.<br />

LIBRARY ENDOWMENT FUND<br />

The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Library Endowment Fund shall be expended for <strong>the</strong> general purposes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> Library at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Library Syndicate.
