from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council. All o<strong>the</strong>r expenses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> examination shall be defrayed out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Fund.<br />
7. At every award <strong>of</strong> Scholarships <strong>the</strong> Examiners shall publish an order <strong>of</strong> merit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> candidates<br />
who have distinguished <strong>the</strong>mselves in <strong>the</strong> examination. If two or more candidates show equal pr<strong>of</strong>iciency<br />
preference shall be given to natives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> counties <strong>of</strong> Wilts, Somerset, or Gloucester, including <strong>the</strong><br />
city and county <strong>of</strong> Bristol.<br />
8. A Scholarship shall be tenable for three years from 1 October preceding <strong>the</strong> award.<br />
9. The annual value <strong>of</strong> each Scholarship shall be such sum as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers<br />
within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />
10. Each Scholar shall receive <strong>the</strong> emolument <strong>of</strong> his or her Scholarship in such instalments as shall<br />
be determined by <strong>the</strong> Council on <strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers.<br />
11. After provision has been made for <strong>the</strong> Scholarships in accordance with Regulation 2 any<br />
unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied from time to time, at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Managers and subject to such conditions as <strong>the</strong>y may think fit,<br />
(a) to make grants to Scholars or o<strong>the</strong>r persons engaged in <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> Hebrew;<br />
(b) to make purchases <strong>of</strong> books and o<strong>the</strong>r material;<br />
(c) to assist in any o<strong>the</strong>r way <strong>the</strong> promotion and encouragement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> Hebrew in <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong>.<br />
All disbursements that are made from <strong>the</strong> Fund under this regulation shall be published in <strong>the</strong> Reporter<br />
and shall be associated with <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> John Stewart <strong>of</strong> Rannoch.<br />

THE JOHN STEWART OF RANNOCH G REEK AND LATIN FUND AND SCHOLARSHIPS<br />
Endowments, 1904, p. 335<br />
1. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> John Stewart <strong>of</strong> Rannoch Greek and Latin Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board<br />
<strong>of</strong> Classics.<br />
2. The first charge on <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be provision, if <strong>the</strong>re are candidates <strong>of</strong> sufficient<br />
merit, for <strong>the</strong> award in each year <strong>of</strong> at least four Scholarships in Greek and Latin.<br />
3. The Scholarships shall be awarded on <strong>the</strong> performance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> candidates for Part IB <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Classical Tripos; provided that<br />
(a) no candidate shall be awarded a Scholarship unless he or she has attained a first-class aggregate<br />
mark in <strong>the</strong> papers in translation from Greek and Latin into English;<br />
(b) a candidate who has not been placed in <strong>the</strong> first class in <strong>the</strong> examination as a whole shall not<br />
be awarded a Scholarship unless in <strong>the</strong> view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Awarders <strong>the</strong> circumstances are exceptional.<br />
4. The Examiners for Part IB <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Classical Tripos shall be <strong>the</strong> Awarders for <strong>the</strong> Scholarships.<br />

shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />
