within <strong>the</strong> Department including provision <strong>of</strong> new (and improvement <strong>of</strong> existing) premises and<br />
facilities appropriate for such research; and (b) research initiated or sponsored by <strong>the</strong> Department.<br />
4. Any unexpended income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund in any financial year may ei<strong>the</strong>r be added to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Fund or accumulated for use as income in any one or more subsequent years, as determined by<br />
<strong>the</strong> Managers.<br />
5. The Managers may accept additional sums from time to time for <strong>the</strong> same purpose and add <strong>the</strong>m<br />
to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />
6. All powers and discretions conferred on <strong>the</strong> Managers by this Grace, general law, and statute<br />
shall be exercised by a decision <strong>of</strong> a majority consisting <strong>of</strong> at least three Managers, who shall include<br />
<strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Pathology or <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Immunology, present and voting at any<br />
meeting.<br />

General regulations<br />
1. The administration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be entrusted to <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pathology in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong>, in conjunction with a Board consisting <strong>of</strong> three Managers.<br />
The Regius Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Physic in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Physiology in <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong>, and <strong>the</strong> President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Royal College <strong>of</strong> Physicians <strong>of</strong> London, shall be<br />
<strong>the</strong> Managers.<br />
No resolution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers shall be valid unless approved by at least two Managers, at a meeting<br />
to which all <strong>the</strong> Managers have been summoned, save that a resolution circulated to and signed by all<br />
<strong>the</strong> Managers shall have <strong>the</strong> same validity as a resolution carried at a meeting.<br />
2. In case a deputy shall be appointed to discharge <strong>the</strong> duties <strong>of</strong> any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> three Pr<strong>of</strong>essors aforesaid,<br />
such deputy shall, for all <strong>the</strong> purposes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se regulations, take <strong>the</strong> place and exercise <strong>the</strong> powers <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor concerned while acting as deputy.<br />
3. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied from time to time as follows:<br />
(a) to provide one or more Studentships to be called John Lucas Walker Studentships <strong>the</strong> holders<br />
<strong>of</strong> which shall be ei<strong>the</strong>r Senior Students, who shall devote <strong>the</strong>mselves to original research in<br />
Pathology, or Junior Students, who shall devote <strong>the</strong>mselves to whole-time study and training for<br />
research in Pathology;<br />
(b) after provision has been made for at least one Studentship, to fur<strong>the</strong>r original research in<br />
Pathology by Exhibitions, Prizes, or grants, at <strong>Cambridge</strong> or in London.<br />

The Studentship<br />
4. The value <strong>of</strong> a Senior Studentship and <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> a Junior Studentship shall be such sums as<br />
may be determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers, within ranges approved by <strong>the</strong> Council, on each occasion on<br />
which <strong>the</strong> Managers give notice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir intention to proceed to an election.<br />
5. Three months before <strong>the</strong> date at which, in due course, <strong>the</strong> Studentship would become vacant, or<br />
immediately upon <strong>the</strong> occurrence <strong>of</strong> any casual vacancy, <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pathology shall give such<br />
public notice <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong> as <strong>the</strong> Managers may think desirable; and <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pathology shall report<br />
to <strong>the</strong> Managers upon <strong>the</strong> qualifications <strong>of</strong> all candidates whose names are sent in. The Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />
Pathology shall at <strong>the</strong> same time nominate one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> candidates as <strong>the</strong> person best qualified, in his or<br />
her opinion, for election, and <strong>the</strong> Managers shall ei<strong>the</strong>r elect <strong>the</strong> person so nominated, or such o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> candidates as <strong>the</strong> three Managers may unanimously agree to elect.<br />
6. The nomination and election shall be made so that <strong>the</strong> newly elected Student may be able to<br />
enter upon <strong>the</strong> Studentship as soon as <strong>the</strong> vacancy occurs, or as soon as is practicable.<br />
7. The Studentship shall not be awarded upon <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> a competitive examination.<br />
8. Subject to <strong>the</strong> foregoing provisions, <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Pathology or <strong>the</strong> Managers may take such<br />
steps as <strong>the</strong>y may think fit to ascertain <strong>the</strong> qualifications <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> candidates.<br />
9. Candidature for <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall be open, but <strong>the</strong> Student, if not a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>,<br />
must become such before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> term next after election and remain such during tenure.<br />
10. A Student during <strong>the</strong> tenure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Studentship shall, if a Senior Student, undertake original<br />
research in Pathology, or, if a Junior Student, undertake whole-time study and training for research in<br />
Studentship.<br />
