3. The Distributors shall meet at least once in each academical year.<br />

4. The Distributors shall give notice in <strong>the</strong> Reporter each year that <strong>the</strong>y will consider applications<br />

from scholars, which shall be made by <strong>the</strong> Tutors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir respective Colleges.<br />

ARCHBISHOP CRANMER PRIZE, GRANTS, AND STUDENTSHIPS<br />

1. The money received from <strong>the</strong> bequest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reverend Henry Sykes shall be separately invested<br />

and shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> Henry Sykes Fund.<br />

2. There shall be established in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> a prize called <strong>the</strong> Archbishop Cranmer Prize, to be<br />

awarded for an essay, <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> which shall relate to <strong>the</strong> intention and result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> changes in<br />

doctrine, organization, and ritual within <strong>the</strong> Church <strong>of</strong> England between <strong>the</strong> years AD 1500 and 1700;<br />

also <strong>the</strong> bearing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se changes upon <strong>the</strong> political and economic, <strong>the</strong> national and international, <strong>the</strong><br />

literary and social, <strong>the</strong> religious and home life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> English people.<br />

3. The Prize shall be awarded each year in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term.<br />

4. The Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> History shall publish <strong>the</strong> conditions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award in <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Michaelmas Term next preceding that in which <strong>the</strong> Prize is to be awarded.<br />

5. Candidates for <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> and <strong>of</strong> not less than three years’<br />

standing from <strong>the</strong>ir first degree, whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> this or ano<strong>the</strong>r university, at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award.<br />

6. The Adjudicators <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> History who shall appoint referees.<br />

Each referee shall receive such payment from <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund as may be determined by <strong>the</strong><br />

Adjudicators within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council. The Adjudicators may, unless<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rwise specified in <strong>the</strong>se regulations, delegate any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir functions to a committee, consisting <strong>of</strong><br />

not less than three persons, not all <strong>of</strong> whom shall necessarily be members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> History or<br />

<strong>the</strong> Faculty Board.<br />

7. A student shall be required to submit <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> his or her essay for <strong>the</strong> approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Adjudicators before <strong>the</strong> division <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> term previous to <strong>the</strong> date fixed for <strong>the</strong> award; such approval<br />

must be obtained before <strong>the</strong> student is accepted as a candidate. A candidate who has successfully<br />

submitted a <strong>the</strong>sis for a <strong>University</strong> prize or for <strong>the</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> Ph.D. or M.Litt. must declare that <strong>the</strong><br />

essay submitted for this Prize is not substantially identical with his or her previous <strong>the</strong>sis.<br />

8. The essays shall be sent to <strong>the</strong> Registrary not later than 1 October in <strong>the</strong> year in which <strong>the</strong> Prize<br />

is to be awarded.<br />

9. The provision <strong>of</strong> a Prize to <strong>the</strong> successful candidate shall be <strong>the</strong> first charge upon <strong>the</strong> Fund. The<br />

value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> History within a range approved from<br />

time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council. The cost <strong>of</strong> administration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize and grants towards <strong>the</strong> expenses<br />

<strong>of</strong> publication <strong>of</strong> any essays that <strong>the</strong> Adjudicators think worthy <strong>of</strong> publication shall be <strong>the</strong> next charges<br />

upon <strong>the</strong> Fund; any remainder from <strong>the</strong> accumulated income or any part <strong>of</strong> it may at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Adjudicators be awarded to <strong>the</strong> successful candidate as an addition to <strong>the</strong> Prize.<br />

10. After provision has been made for <strong>the</strong> award <strong>of</strong> a Prize in accordance with Regulation 9 any<br />

unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong> Fund may be applied from time to time at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Adjudicators for <strong>the</strong> following purposes:<br />

(a) To make grants for <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>rance <strong>of</strong> research in English ecclesiastical history between 1500<br />

and 1700 as to <strong>the</strong> intention and result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> changes in doctrine, organization, and ritual within<br />

<strong>the</strong> English Church between 1500 and 1700 and <strong>the</strong> bearing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se changes upon <strong>the</strong> political,<br />

economic, national, international, literary, social, religious, and home life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> English people.<br />

The Adjudicators shall determine <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> grants, within a range approved from time to time<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

(b) To provide one or two Archbishop Cranmer Studentships <strong>the</strong> holders <strong>of</strong> which shall devote<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves to original research in English ecclesiastical history between 1500 and 1700 as to <strong>the</strong><br />

intention and result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> changes in doctrine, organization, and ritual within <strong>the</strong> English Church<br />

between 1500 and 1700 and <strong>the</strong> bearing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se changes upon <strong>the</strong> political, economic, national,<br />

international, literary, social, religious, and home life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> English people. The Electors to <strong>the</strong><br />

Studentships shall be <strong>the</strong> Adjudicators <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize who, on each occasion when <strong>the</strong>y intend to<br />

proceed to an election, shall announce <strong>the</strong> date by which applications must be received and <strong>the</strong><br />

manner in which <strong>the</strong>y must be submitted. A Studentship shall be open to any person who is or<br />

is about to become registered as a Graduate Student in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>. The value <strong>of</strong> a Studentship<br />

shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Adjudicators within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong><br />

Fund.<br />
