2. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Earth Sciences, and at least<br />

four persons appointed in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term by <strong>the</strong> Departmental Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Earth Sciences to serve for three years from 1 January following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment, at least one <strong>of</strong><br />

whom shall be a member <strong>of</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> libraries in <strong>the</strong> Department, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r persons being members<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> academic staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department.<br />

3. The income from <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be used solely for <strong>the</strong> purchase <strong>of</strong> printed (including books,<br />

journals, conference proceedings) and electronic materials (including access to journals and databases)<br />

for <strong>the</strong> libraries.<br />

4. Unexpended income shall not be added to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund but shall be accumulated for<br />

use as income in subsequent years.<br />

HULSEAN FUND<br />

Endowments, 1904, p. 117<br />

1. A stipend <strong>of</strong> £10.50 for <strong>the</strong> Preacher shall be a first charge on <strong>the</strong> income available under Statute<br />

E, VI, 3; <strong>the</strong> rest shall be divided into ten equal parts, eight <strong>of</strong> which parts shall be applied to <strong>the</strong><br />

stipend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, one to <strong>the</strong> Prize, and one to <strong>the</strong> stipend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lecturer. Every second year<br />

after payment has been made to <strong>the</strong> Lecturer any unexpended income accumulated in <strong>the</strong> Fund shall<br />

be applied to <strong>the</strong> stipend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor.<br />

The Hulsean Preachership<br />

2. The Preacher shall be elected each year before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lent Term for <strong>the</strong> ensuing<br />

academical year, and shall deliver in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> one sermon on <strong>the</strong> Truth and Excellence <strong>of</strong><br />

Revealed Religion or <strong>the</strong> Evidence <strong>of</strong> Christianity.<br />

The Hulsean Prize<br />

3. The Prize shall be awarded for an essay on some subject, proposed by a candidate and approved<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Adjudicators, connected with <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Christian Religion.<br />

4. The Adjudicators <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essors <strong>of</strong> Divinity. The Adjudicators shall be<br />

empowered to consult Assessors. Each Assessor shall receive such payment from <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Fund as may be determined from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council on <strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty<br />

Board <strong>of</strong> Divinity.<br />

5. Candidature shall be open to any member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> to whom <strong>the</strong> Prize has not previously<br />

been awarded provided that on <strong>the</strong> latest date on which essays must be submitted to <strong>the</strong> Registrary<br />

(a) eight complete terms at least or, if <strong>the</strong> candidate is an Affiliated Student, five complete terms at<br />

least have passed after his or her first term <strong>of</strong> residence;<br />

(b) <strong>the</strong> candidate has not attained <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> twenty-seven years.<br />

6. The subject proposed for an essay shall be sent by a candidate not later than 15 March in each<br />

year to <strong>the</strong> Registrary, who shall submit it to <strong>the</strong> Adjudicators and communicate its approval or rejection<br />

to <strong>the</strong> candidate. Each candidate shall submit his or her essay to <strong>the</strong> Registrary on or before 19 December<br />

in <strong>the</strong> year next following.<br />

7. The prize-winner shall deposit a printed or typewritten copy <strong>of</strong> his or her essay in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

Library.<br />

The Hulsean Lectureship<br />

8. There shall be a Hulsean Lecturer, who shall be elected every second year to hold <strong>of</strong>fice for two<br />

years from 1 January next but one following <strong>the</strong> election and shall be capable <strong>of</strong> re-election after an<br />

interval <strong>of</strong> six years.<br />

9. The Lecturer shall during <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice deliver a course <strong>of</strong> lectures, not fewer than four<br />

nor more than eight in number, on some branch <strong>of</strong> Christian Theology, at such times and in such<br />

places as may be determined from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Electors. The Lecturer shall be required to<br />

deposit a printed or typewritten copy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lectures in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> Library.<br />

10. The Lecturer must be a graduate <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong>, or a graduate <strong>of</strong> some o<strong>the</strong>r university.
