Sciences Tripos for an outstanding performance in ecology in <strong>the</strong> examination for that subject unless<br />
<strong>the</strong> Awarders are <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> opinion that <strong>the</strong>re is no candidate <strong>of</strong> sufficient merit to receive <strong>the</strong> Prize.<br />
3. The Prize shall consist <strong>of</strong> books, to <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> annual income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund, selected by <strong>the</strong><br />
prize-winner subject to <strong>the</strong> approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Plant Sciences.<br />
4. If in any year no award is made <strong>the</strong> income for that year shall be added to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

STEPHEN H AWKING ENDOWMENT FOR COSMOLOGICAL RESEARCH<br />
1. The sum <strong>of</strong> US$1,845,000 received from <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong> in America to honour <strong>the</strong> life<br />
and research <strong>of</strong> Stephen William Hawking, CH, CBE, Ph.D., FRS, Lucasian Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics,<br />
Fellow <strong>of</strong> Gonville and Caius College, shall form a fund to be known as <strong>the</strong> Stephen Hawking<br />
Endowment for Cosmological Research.<br />
2. The income and up to one-third <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be used exclusively to assist,<br />
enhance, support, bolster, and sustain research, cosmological or o<strong>the</strong>rwise, in <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Applied<br />
Ma<strong>the</strong>matics and Theoretical Physics, as chosen by and approved by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Hawking personally<br />
during his lifetime. Thereafter, <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be administered by four Managers who shall be <strong>the</strong><br />
Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Applied Ma<strong>the</strong>matics and Theoretical Physics, <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matical<br />
Physics (1967), and two Managers appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics. The Managers<br />
appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board shall each serve for four years from 1 January following his or her<br />
appointment. The Managers shall apply <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund to <strong>the</strong> support <strong>of</strong> scientific research<br />
and activity in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> which would fur<strong>the</strong>r human understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fundamental questions<br />
in cosmology and gravitation addressed by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Hawking, or to <strong>the</strong> support <strong>of</strong> research which<br />
<strong>the</strong>y believe would have been <strong>of</strong> interest to Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Hawking.<br />

Purpose.<br />
STEPHEN H AWKING TRUST FUND<br />
1. The monies received by <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> to perpetuate <strong>the</strong> intellectual legacy <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Stephen<br />
Hawking, Lucasian Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics, in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical cosmology shall form a fund<br />
to be known as <strong>the</strong> Stephen Hawking Trust Fund.<br />
2. The Fund may include both endowment and expendable capital contributed by donors. The<br />
expendable capital, and <strong>the</strong> income from <strong>the</strong> endowment shall be used to support <strong>the</strong> activities <strong>of</strong> a<br />
Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, whose goals shall be:<br />
(i) to promote research and postgraduate teaching in <strong>the</strong>oretical cosmology within <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>;<br />
(ii) to co-operate with outside bodies in <strong>the</strong> promotion <strong>of</strong> research and postgraduate teaching in<br />
<strong>the</strong>oretical cosmology internationally.<br />
3. The administration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be under <strong>the</strong> control <strong>of</strong> a Board <strong>of</strong> Managers consisting <strong>of</strong>:<br />
(a) <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Applied Ma<strong>the</strong>matics and Theoretical Physics, who shall serve<br />
as <strong>the</strong> Chairman;<br />
(b) <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matical Physics (1967);<br />
(c) two Pr<strong>of</strong>essors working in a relevant scientific discipline appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong><br />
Ma<strong>the</strong>matics;<br />
(d) one additional <strong>University</strong> Teaching Officer in <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Ma<strong>the</strong>matics co-opted by <strong>the</strong><br />
Managers;<br />
(e) Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Stephen Hawking during his life-time;<br />
(f) up to three distinguished persons external to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> appointed by <strong>the</strong> General Board on<br />
<strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers.<br />
4. Members in classes (c) and (f) shall be appointed in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term to serve for four years<br />
from 1 January following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment. Co-opted members in class (d) shall serve until 31 December<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year in which <strong>the</strong>y are co-opted or <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year following, as <strong>the</strong> Managers shall determine at<br />
<strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir co-optation.<br />
5. The Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Centre for Theoretical Cosmology shall be appointed by <strong>the</strong> General Board<br />
on <strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers. He or she shall hold <strong>of</strong>fice for four years, and shall be<br />
eligible for reappointment. The Director shall serve as Secretary to <strong>the</strong> Board.<br />
6. The Directorship <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Centre shall be held concurrently with a <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice in <strong>the</strong> Department<br />
<strong>of</strong> Applied Ma<strong>the</strong>matics and Theoretical Physics.<br />
