FREDERICK WILLIAMSON MEMORIAL FUND<br />

1. The sums given and bequea<strong>the</strong>d to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> by Mrs Margaret D. Williamson in memory <strong>of</strong><br />

her husband, <strong>the</strong> late Frederick Williamson, B.A., <strong>of</strong> Emmanuel College, shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong><br />

Frederick Williamson Memorial Fund, <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> which shall be used:<br />

(a) for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>ring research relating to <strong>the</strong> peoples <strong>of</strong> Tibet, Bhutan, Sikkim, and<br />

neighbouring Himalayan areas, <strong>the</strong>ir society, religion, and material culture; and<br />

(b) for <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Williamson Collection in <strong>the</strong> Museum <strong>of</strong> Archaeology and Anthropology.<br />

2. The Fund shall be administered by a Board <strong>of</strong> Managers consisting <strong>of</strong>:<br />

(a) <strong>the</strong> Curator <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Museum <strong>of</strong> Archaeology and Anthropology, who shall act as Secretary;<br />

(b) two persons appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Human, Social, and Political Science, one <strong>of</strong><br />

whom shall be a person engaged in <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> Social Anthropology;<br />

(c) one person appointed by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Asian and Middle Eastern Studies;<br />

(d) one person appointed by Emmanuel College.<br />

Managers in classes (b), (c), and (d) shall be appointed in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term to serve for four years<br />

from 1 January following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment.<br />

3. Subject to <strong>the</strong> provisions <strong>of</strong> Regulation 1, <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied from time to<br />

time, at <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Managers and subject to such conditions as <strong>the</strong>y may think fit, for <strong>the</strong><br />

following purposes:<br />

(a) to make grants to persons engaged in advanced study or research;<br />

(b) to make provision for one or more Fellowships, which shall be named Williamson Fellowships;<br />

(c) to purchase specimens and material for <strong>the</strong> Museum <strong>of</strong> Archaeology and Anthropology;<br />

(d) to fur<strong>the</strong>r in any o<strong>the</strong>r way <strong>the</strong> purposes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund as specified in Regulation 1.<br />

The Fund shall not be applied to <strong>the</strong> regular maintenance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Museum <strong>of</strong> Archaeology and<br />

Anthropology.<br />

4. Before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term each year <strong>the</strong> Managers shall publish a Notice inviting<br />

applications for Fellowships, or for grants from <strong>the</strong> Fund, or for both.<br />

5. The Managers may elect to a Fellowship any person whose qualifications <strong>the</strong>y consider suitable,<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r such person is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> or not. A Fellow shall undertake research in a<br />

subject approved by <strong>the</strong> Managers.<br />

6. The tenure <strong>of</strong> a Fellowship shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers on <strong>the</strong> occasion <strong>of</strong> each election.<br />

A Fellow shall be eligible for re-election, provided that <strong>the</strong> tenure <strong>of</strong> a Fellowship shall not normally<br />

exceed three years in all.<br />

7. The stipend <strong>of</strong> a Fellow shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> General Board on <strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Managers on <strong>the</strong> occasion <strong>of</strong> each election.<br />

RAYMOND AND EDITH WILLIAMSON FUND<br />

1. The sums received under <strong>the</strong> Wills <strong>of</strong> Raymond Williamson, <strong>of</strong> Clare College, formerly Reader<br />

in Morbid Histology, and Edith E<strong>the</strong>l Williamson, his wife, shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> Raymond and<br />

Edith Williamson Fund for History and Philosophy <strong>of</strong> Science, <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> which shall be used to<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> biological sciences, including medicine.<br />

2. The Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be:<br />

(a) <strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> History and Philosophy <strong>of</strong> Science;<br />

(b) <strong>the</strong> Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> History and Philosophy <strong>of</strong> Science;<br />

(c) <strong>the</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> History and Philosophy <strong>of</strong> Science;<br />

(d) <strong>the</strong> Curator <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Whipple Museum <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> History <strong>of</strong> Science;<br />

(e) three persons appointed by <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> History and Philosophy <strong>of</strong> Science, who shall be<br />

appointed in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term to serve for three years from 1 January following <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

appointment.<br />

3. The first charge on <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> one or more studentships,<br />

to be known as Williamson Studentships, which shall be open to any person who is, or is about to be,<br />

registered as a Graduate Student in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, and who intends to undertake advanced study or<br />

research in <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> biological sciences, including medicine.<br />

4. The Managers shall give not less than three months’ notice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir intention to proceed to an<br />

election. A Studentship shall be tenable for one year in <strong>the</strong> first instance. A Student shall be eligible<br />

for re-election, provided that <strong>the</strong> tenure <strong>of</strong> a Studentship shall not normally exceed three years in all.<br />
