3. The Prize shall be open for competition among all members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Senate and all persons who<br />

are possessors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> status <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Arts.<br />

4. In <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term next following <strong>the</strong>ir appointment <strong>the</strong> Examiners shall give<br />

public notice <strong>of</strong> a subject for <strong>the</strong> Prize, and all exercises for <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be sent to <strong>the</strong> Registrary<br />

not later than 30 September next following.<br />

5. Each candidate shall send three copies <strong>of</strong> his or her exercise to <strong>the</strong> Registrary. The exercise shall<br />

be in a printed or typewritten form; it shall bear a motto but not <strong>the</strong> candidate’s name, and shall be<br />

accompanied by a sealed envelope bearing <strong>the</strong> same motto outside and containing <strong>the</strong> candidate’s name<br />

and College.<br />

6. The successful candidate shall receive <strong>the</strong> net income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Seatonian Fund after payment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Examiners.<br />

7. The successful candidate shall deposit a printed or typewritten copy <strong>of</strong> his or her poem in <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> Library.<br />

SEDGWICK PRIZE<br />

Endowments, 1904, p. 404<br />

1. A prize, called <strong>the</strong> Sedgwick Prize, shall be given every second year for <strong>the</strong> best essay on some<br />

subject in Geology or <strong>the</strong> kindred sciences.<br />

2. The Prize shall be open to all <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers and Fellows <strong>of</strong> Colleges, and to o<strong>the</strong>r persons<br />

employed by <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> to carry out research in <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Earth Sciences and Geography,<br />

who have resided sixty days during <strong>the</strong> twelve months preceding <strong>the</strong> day on or before which <strong>the</strong> essays<br />

are to be sent in.<br />

3. The essays shall be sent to <strong>the</strong> Registrary on or before 1 October 2007; and so on every second<br />

year. Each essay shall be clearly written, or printed, or typewritten. It is open to candidates to<br />

incorporate in <strong>the</strong>ir essays material which <strong>the</strong>y have already published, but <strong>the</strong>y are expected to submit<br />

a connected presentation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir complete investigations.<br />

4. The successful candidate shall receive two years’ net income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund, or, if no essay be<br />

thought worthy <strong>of</strong> a Prize, this amount shall be added to <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund.<br />

5. The Examiners shall be <strong>the</strong> Woodwardian Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Geology, and two persons appointed by<br />

<strong>the</strong> General Board on <strong>the</strong> nomination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Earth Sciences and Geography. Each <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Examiners appointed by <strong>the</strong> General Board shall receive such sum from <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize<br />

Fund, except where no essay is sent in, as shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Earth Sciences<br />

and Geography within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

6. If an Examiner is prevented by illness or o<strong>the</strong>r cause from examining, a deputy shall be appointed<br />

by <strong>the</strong> General Board on <strong>the</strong> nomination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Earth Sciences and Geography.<br />

7. The Examiners appointed in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term 2006 shall hold <strong>of</strong>fice until <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Lent Term 2008, that is to say, until <strong>the</strong> award has been made. The new Examiners shall be appointed<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term 2007, and <strong>the</strong>y shall <strong>the</strong>n, in consultation with <strong>the</strong> outgoing Examiners, select<br />

a subject for <strong>the</strong> essays on which <strong>the</strong> award is to be made in <strong>the</strong> Lent Term 2010; and so on every<br />

second year.<br />

8. The Examiners appointed in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term 2006 shall award <strong>the</strong> Prize some time in <strong>the</strong><br />

Lent Term 2008, and at <strong>the</strong> same time <strong>the</strong> Woodwardian Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Geology shall announce <strong>the</strong><br />

subject for <strong>the</strong> next essay; and so on every second year.<br />

9. The <strong>University</strong> shall have power to alter and amend this scheme from time to time by Grace, on<br />

<strong>the</strong> recommendation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Earth Sciences and Geography.<br />

SEDGWICK ROUGH FUND<br />

1. The gift <strong>of</strong> Major W. Sedgwick Rough, a great-nephew <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Adam Sedgwick in whose<br />

memory <strong>the</strong> Sedgwick Museum <strong>of</strong> Geology (now <strong>the</strong> Sedgwick Museum <strong>of</strong> Earth Sciences) was<br />

erected, shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> Sedgwick Rough Fund.<br />

2. The capital and income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be applied for such purposes in <strong>the</strong> Sedgwick Museum<br />

<strong>of</strong> Earth Sciences as <strong>the</strong> Director and <strong>the</strong> Curators <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Museum, jointly, with <strong>the</strong> concurrence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Woodwardian Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Geology shall from time to time decide.<br />
