1. The sums given to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> in 1870 by <strong>the</strong> Reverend Joseph Barber Lightfoot, D.D.,<br />

Hulsean Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Divinity, shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> Lightfoot Fund.<br />

2. The income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be used for <strong>the</strong> encouragement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> History and more<br />

especially <strong>of</strong> Ecclesiastical History.<br />

3. The Fund shall be administered by four Managers, namely <strong>the</strong> Dixie Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Ecclesiastical<br />

History and three persons appointed in <strong>the</strong> Michaelmas Term, one by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Divinity<br />

and two by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> History, to serve for four years from 1 January following <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

appointment.<br />

4. The first charge on <strong>the</strong> income <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> one or more Lightfoot<br />

Scholarships, <strong>the</strong> holders <strong>of</strong> which shall devote <strong>the</strong>mselves to <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> Ecclesiastical History. A<br />

Scholarship shall be open to any person who is or is about to be registered as a Graduate Student in<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>. A Scholarship shall be tenable for one year in <strong>the</strong> first instance, and may be renewed<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Managers for a second or third year, provided that <strong>the</strong> Managers are satisfied with <strong>the</strong> Scholar’s<br />

diligence and progress.<br />

5. The Electors to <strong>the</strong> Scholarships shall be <strong>the</strong> Managers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fund. Before <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> each<br />

Michaelmas Term, <strong>the</strong> Managers shall publish a Notice giving details <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> competition for Lightfoot<br />

Scholarships tenable from 1 October next following. Each candidate shall be required to submit a<br />

dissertation, <strong>of</strong> not less than 7,000 words and not more than 15,000 words in length, on a subject in<br />

Ecclesiastical History, which shall be chosen by <strong>the</strong> candidate and approved by <strong>the</strong> Managers. Each<br />

year <strong>the</strong> Managers may, if <strong>the</strong>y see fit, appoint one or more referees who shall report to <strong>the</strong> Managers<br />

on <strong>the</strong> dissertations submitted. Each referee shall receive from <strong>the</strong> Fund such sum as shall be determined<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Managers within a range approved from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council. A Manager may be<br />

appointed as a referee and shall not <strong>the</strong>reby cease to be a Manager.<br />

6. A Lightfoot Scholar shall receive such emolument, within a range determined from time to time<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Council, as <strong>the</strong> Managers shall determine after taking account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholar’s financial<br />

circumstances.<br />

7. The second charge on <strong>the</strong> Fund shall be <strong>the</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> a Lightfoot Prize for Ecclesiastical<br />

History, which shall be awarded annually by <strong>the</strong> Examiners for Part IIB <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Theological and<br />

Religious Studies Tripos for <strong>the</strong> best performance by a candidate for that examination in one or more<br />

papers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> examination designated for that purpose from time to time by <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong><br />

Divinity. 1 For <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> making <strong>the</strong> award <strong>the</strong> Examiners shall be empowered (a) to take account<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> an outstanding performance in a single paper or <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> general level attained by a candidate<br />

in more than one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> papers designated, and (b) to consider as if it were a paper a dissertation<br />

submitted under Regulation 16 for <strong>the</strong> Tripos on an approved topic related to one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> designated<br />

papers. The value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prize shall be determined by <strong>the</strong> Managers within a range approved from<br />

time to time by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />

8. Any unexpended income in <strong>the</strong> Fund may be applied by <strong>the</strong> Managers for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>ring<br />

<strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> History and more especially <strong>of</strong> Ecclesiastical History by making grants in aid <strong>of</strong> research<br />

to members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

9. The <strong>University</strong> shall have power to change <strong>the</strong>se regulations, provided that <strong>the</strong> founder’s object,<br />

namely <strong>the</strong> encouragement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> History and more especially Ecclesiastical History, be strictly<br />

respected.<br />

PETER LIPTON FUND<br />

Title.<br />

Grace 1 <strong>of</strong> 3 June 2009<br />

1. Gifts to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> made in memory <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Peter Lipton, first Hans Rausing Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

<strong>of</strong> History and Philosophy <strong>of</strong> Science and Fellow <strong>of</strong> King’s College, shall form a fund called <strong>the</strong> Peter<br />

Lipton Fund.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> examination to be held in 2006 and until fur<strong>the</strong>r notice <strong>the</strong> Faculty Board <strong>of</strong> Divinity have designated <strong>the</strong> following<br />

papers for this purpose: Papers C4, D1, and D2 (provided that <strong>the</strong> only subjects eligible in Papers D1 and D2 are subjects in<br />

ecclesiastical history).
