บ้านเรือนถิ่นไทยในช่วงเจ็ดทศวรรษ 2489-2559

นำโดยอดีตหัวหน้ากองในสำนักงานความมั่นคงแห่ง
ชาติ แต่ยังไม่เป็นที่รู้จักในวงกว้างจนกระทั่งมารวมตัว
กับกลุ่มของนายสนธิ ลิ้มทองกุล ความที่นายสนธิเป็น
เจ้าของช่องดาวเทียมชื่อดังหรือเอเอสทีวี ทำให้กระแส
ของขบวนการเสื้อเหลืองประสบความสำเร็จอย่างมาก
กลุ่มเสื้อเหลืองมองว่าตนเป็นผู้ปกป้องราชบัลลังก์และ
เห็นว่านายทักษิณและกลุ่มเสื้อแดงเป็นภัยต่อสถาบัน
กษัตริย์ ฝ่ายที่ไม่ชื ่นชอบมักกล่าวว่ากลุ่มเสื้อเหลือง
นิยมหลักนิติวิธี (หรืออันที่จริงควรเรียกว่ากฎของศาล)
เพราะขึ้นศาลทีไรก็ชนะเสมอ กลุ่มเสื้อเหลืองยังเห็นว่า
ระบอบประชาธิปไตยของไทยมีปัญหา โดยเฉพาะเรื่อง
การใช้เงินซื้อเสียงทางการเมืองนั้นบ่อนทำลายระบบ
ทั้งหมดและลดทอนความชอบธรรมของระบบสภา นาย
สนธิเคยนำเสนอระบบการเมืองแบบใหม่ที่เป็น
ประชาธิปไตยน้อยกว่าระบบที่ใช้กันอยู่ในปัจจุบัน แต่
เหตุที่มันเป็นประเด็นอ่อนไหว จึงไม่ได้รับการตอบรับ
จากกลุ่มแกนนำผู้ดำเนินการกลยุทธ์บนท้องถนนของ
กลุ่มเสื้อเหลืองคือ พลตรีจ ำลอง ศรีเมือง ที่เป็นมังสวิรัติ
อย่างเคร่งครัด (แต่ก็เป็นทหารด้วย) การที่พลตรีจำลอง
เคยเป็นทหารมาก่อน จึงมีความเป็นผู้นำสูง การ
The formation of the new government coincided with
the return of external economic turbulence, after a hiatus
during Thaksin’s and Sorrayuth’s governments. The first
half of 2008 was a time of steep commodity price increases.
This affected Thailand through mostly increases in food
prices, preeminently rice prices. Over the years, the share
of rice in consumers’ budgets has declined to be less than
5%. Consequently, when prices rose in early 2008, the
Samak government’s action was to raise the price support
levels higher than the already record high prices. Samak,
who throughout his life was a Bangkok-based politician,
took this action to retain Thaksin’s rural support base.
However, later on, as oil prices also rose steeply, the
Samak government introduced six measures to help out
the urban population, including free bus rides, free train
rides, and a reduction of energy taxation. True to populist
form, the cost of these subsidies (except the reduction of
energy taxes) was parked in the balance sheets of the
relevant state enterprises that were providing these services.
If the constitution drafters’ aim was to have a weak

ในเดือนเมษายน พ.ศ. 2552 จำนวนผู้สนับสนุนกลุ่ม
เสื้อแดงเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างรวดเร็วระหว่างการประท้วงครั้งแรก
และครั้งที่สองในเดือนมีนาคมถัดมา มีการตั้งโรงเรียน
การเมืองขึ้นในภาคอีสานและภาคเหนือ ทำให้มีผู้
สนับสนุนเพิ่มขึ้นเป็นจำนวนมาก กลุ่มเสื้อแดงนั้นจัด
ตั้งมาเพื่อสนับสนุนนายทักษิณ ชินวัตรโดยตรง และ
นายทักษิณก็สนับสนุนกลับโดยพูดให้กำลังใจ หรืออาจ
จะกำลังเงินด้วย ถึงแม้ชาวเสื้อแดงส่วนใหญ่ที่มาร่วม
ประท้วงจะใช้เงินส่วนตัว กลุ่มเสื้อแดงมีความเกี่ยวพัน
กับพรรคของนายทักษิณในสภาแนบแน่นกว่าที่เสื้อเหลือง
เป็นกับพรรคประชาธิปัตย์มาก เช่นเดียวกับที่เสื้อเหลือง
มีเอเอสทีวี เสื้อแดงก็มีช่องดาวเทียมของตัวเองชื่อ
พีทีวี แต่ถูกสั่งปิดเมื่อเกิดความไม่สงบใน พ.ศ. 2553
กลุ่มเสื้อแดงสนับสนุนการเลือกตั้งและรัฐบาลระบบ
สภาอย่างแน่วแน่ แต่ไม่นิยมวิถีทางกฎหมาย (ซึ่งไม่ค่อย
executive, then they were quite successful, for 2008 saw
no less than four prime ministers. The two Thaksinite prime
ministers were brought down by the judiciary, with the
Yellow shirts’ demonstrations as the backdrop,while the
military stayed neutral. Eventually, after another dissolution
of the Thaksinite party, the opposition Democrats were
able to obtain a parliamentary majority, in coalition with
the same parties that were previously backing the Thaksinites,
plus a breakaway faction from within the Thaksinite party.
They entered office just as the impact of the global financial
crisis was reaching Thailand.
3.4 The Democrats have their turn...and also the Reds
The new government under Abhisit Vejjajiva promptly
got down to work to fend off the effects of the global
financial crisis on Thailand. That crisis affected the financial
system only slightly, but it enormously affected the export
sector. Primarily, news of the crisis generated very rapidly
a sharp worldwide inventory cycle which led export orders
to be cancelled in the expectation that the real economy
