บ้านเรือนถิ่นไทยในช่วงเจ็ดทศวรรษ 2489-2559

จากสมัยรัชกาลที่4 ซึ่งมีจำนวนประมาณ 400,000 คน
เนื้อที่ของกรุงเทพฯ ขยายตัวขึ้นเป็น 8,330 ไร่ หรือเพิ่ม
ขึ้นเป็นสองเท่าของเนื้อที่กรุงเทพฯ ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 4
ในการสร้างระบบสาธารณูปโภคเพื่อรองรับการ
ขยายตัวของประชากร และการขยายตัวทางกายภาพ
ของเมืองนั ้น พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้า
เจ้าอยู่หัวทรงให้ความสำคัญกับการสัญจรไปมาทางน้ำ
เป็นอันดับแรก รองลงมาก็คือการสร้างเครือข่ายถนน
ทั้งนี้ทรงมีจุดประสงค์ที่จะใช้เครือข่ายการคมนาคม
เป็นตัวนำความเจริญขยายออกไปตามทิศทางต่างๆ
ของกรุงเทพฯ เช่น ในตอนต้นรัชกาลนั้นทรงให้ความ
สำคัญกับการสร้างความเจริญให้กับบริเวณพื้นที่ทาง
ตอนเหนือของกรุงเทพฯ จึงทรงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ขุด
คลองเปรมประชากรขึ้น และโดยรวมแล้วทางราชการ
ได้ขุดคลองรวมทั้งสิ้น 12 คลอง แต่โครงการขุดคลองที่
ใหญ่ที่สุดในรัชกาลได้แก่ การขุดคลองรังสิตประยูรศักดิ์
หรือเรียกกันโดยทั่วไปว่า คลองรังสิต ซึ่งเป็นคลองสาย
หลักในโครงการพัฒนาที่ดินขนาดใหญ่แห่งแรกของ
ประเทศไทยที่ได้ดำเนินการขุดเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2433 - 2448
โดยบริษัทขุดคลองแลคูนาสยาม ซึ่งเป็นบริษัทเอกชนที่
Ministry of Interior. Döhring was also the first foreigner to
have written a dissertation on the architecture of Siam.
In engineering, Carlo Allegri, an Italian engineer,
played an important role in the Department of Public Works
and became its Chief Engineer in 1892. He was one of
the people who jointly designed a foundation system for
constructing buildings on the heavy clay soils of Bangkok,
which differed from the more commonly known pile or
spread foundations. Based on the principle of erecting a
building on load-bearing vessel, the foundation acts like
a buoyant reinforced concrete float that is stabilized and
supported by the clay on which it is built.
To add to the list, another notable Italian was a
Signor Rigoli, the artist who was responsible for painting
the frescoes at Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall, Bang
Khunphrom Palace, and Wat Rajadhivas.
Being the capital city, Bangkok was the center of the
country’s development and therefore the hub where all
kinds of dynamic activities took place. The city became
an international maritime port, the center of commerce,

ให้ความสำคัญกับการดูแลเครือข่ายถนนในบริเวณ
กำแพงเมือง เช่น การปรับปรุงถนนสายเก่าได้แก่ ถนน
บำรุงเมือง และเฟื่องนคร เป็นต้น นอกจากนั้นก็มีการ
สร้างถนนขึ้นใหม่อีก 5 สาย ได้แก่ ถนนจักรพงษ์ ถนน
พระอาทิตย์ ถนนพระสุเมรุ ถนนจักรเพชร และถนนมหาไชย
ต่อมาในช่วงกลางรัชกาลราว พ.ศ. 2427 - 2439
รายได้แผ่นดินเริ่มดีขึ้นจึงได้ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ
ให้สร้างถนนขึ้นใหม่หลายสายซึ่งเป็นถนนที่มีขนาด
กว้างกว่าสมัยก่อน เช่น โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างถนน
ริมกำแพงเมืองด้านในติดต่อกันเป็นวงรอบพระนคร
เว้นแต่ตอนที่เป็นวังหน้าเท่านั้น นอกจากนี้ก็มีการสร้าง
ถนนเชื่อมต่อเพื่อขยายความเจริญออกไปยังทิศทาง
ต่างๆ ของกรุงเทพฯ ทางด้านทิศตะวันออกสร้างถนน
สระปทุม ถนนนางเลิ้ง ถนนบริพัตร และถนนประแจจีน
(ถนนเพชรบุรี) ทางด้านทิศเหนือสร้างถนนสามเสน
และถนนกรุงเกษม ทางตอนใต้ของกรุงเทพฯ นั้น

economy, among others. Population size increased from
400,000 people in the previous reign to 600,000 while its
physical size expanded to 8,330 rais, which was twice
the area that it occupied during the period of Rama IV.
In setting up the infrastructure to cope with increasing
population and physical expansion of the city, Rama V
gave primary importance to water transportation, and
secondary importance to setting up road network system
so as to spread the development out in different directions.
Focusing on developing the northern part of Bangkok
during the early period of his reign for example, the king
ordered the construction of Prem Prachakorn Canal to
lead developments out in that direction. In total, twelve
canals were built, with Rangsit Prayurasak Canal or
Khlong Rangsit being the largest one constructed during
the reign. This canal was a major canal in the first large
scale land-development project in the kingdom, and was
built from 1890 to 1905 by a private canal construction
company called Lae-khu-na (Laguna?) Siam. The royal
