at Tha Din Daeng where, within three days of battle, their
stronghold was promptly destroyed by the Siamese. This
was an important victory for Siam and from 1785 until
the end of Rama I, the political situation in the kingdom
became calm and peaceful enough to establish a proper
settlement for the people to inhabit and earn their living.
Phra Maha Dharmika Raja (The Almighty and
Righteous King)
Apart from founding the House of Chakri and the new
capital of Krung Rattanakosin, King Rama I also instituted
the new Rattanakosin Kingship ideology. Reference to this
ideology could be found on the stone inscription at Wat
Phra Chetuphon or Wat Po (built circa 1788 – 1800) in
which Rama I was portrayed as a Dharmika Raja and a
Bodhisattva (the Forthcoming Buddha). Apart from the
Wat Po inscription, Book Two of the literary writing on
Buddhist Cosmology “Tribhumi Loka Vinijchaya Katha”
(the story of the Three Planes of Existence) authorized by
Rama I and written by Phraya Dharma Preecha in 1802,
also explained that the world’s first king was a Bodhisattva
who was publicly proclaimed “Phra Maha Sammati” 1
(The Omnipotent Lord who was proclaimed King) as was
King Rama I.
Thus the ideology of the Chakri Dynasty pertaining to
Rattanakosin Kingship was unquestionably clear. The king
is to be a righteous person who patronizes and protects
Buddhism in addition to being a Bodhisattva who helps
his subjects to be free of sufferings from Dukkha (suffering
itself). Rama I also forbade Shivalinga or Lingm (Phallic)
worship while Buddhism was given greater importance by
Siamese rulers as being the principal religion and the most
important social value of Siamese society.
Formation of the new capital
In moving the capital city across to the east bank of
the Chao Phraya River, the rulers had the image of the
former glory of Ayutthaya in mind. Military reasons such
as security and defense against further enemy attacks
together with the convenience in using waterways as the
main communication route, were among the major reasons
for selecting Bangkok, which was a small village then,
