Though staying elsewhere now, there are times when
I miss my Decho home.
Perhaps as a result of the fact that a home is more
than a construction with bricks and wood, built on land in
accordance with some architects’ designs, people- both
ordinary and royal, get “homesick” at times.
In King Rama V’s own writing- Klai Barn (Away from
Home), he wrote on the second night during his second
trip to Europe in his letter dated March 28, 1907 that:
“I woke up at 11 a.m., had bread and milk and fruits.
I miss my home so much that tears silently well in my eyes.”
Though people miss their homes at times, but what
exactly is this “homesickness”? And why such feeling
appears?
“HOMESICKNESS”? 1
Once upon a time, feeling “homesick” was considered
a disease. Johannes Hofer did his research on foreign
students, migrant labors, and Swiss mercenary in his
Medical Dissertation of
“homesick”
Helen
Cox และ Colin Holmes ทำงานวิจัย (“Loss, Healing
and the Power of Place”,
Medical Dissertation of Nostalgia (1688) by connecting
“homesick” to “nostalgia”, and found that those suffered
from homesickness faced physical sickness which
included dizziness, nauseating with poor appetite, high
fever alongside feeling depressed. They could not separate
the past from the present, nor could they identify facts
from the imaginary. That’s why it has been called “homesick”.
But do those who feel “homesick” really sick?
After the great Australian forest fire, Cox and Holmes
in their research, “Loss, Healing and the Power of Place”
(2000), found that those who lost their houses and properties
in the fire knew from the beginning that they lived in risk
area. But when disaster struck, they felt more about
the loss of trees, and the deaths of animals in the fire than
their material loss. When asked what they would do after
such disaster, not even one family told the researchers
that they would move elsewhere. After the fire, they began
to rebuild their houses and plant the trees. Why is it that
people who knew, and in fact already went through such
