บ้านเรือนถิ่นไทยในช่วงเจ็ดทศวรรษ 2489-2559

ก็คือ บ้านไม้ฉลุลาย หรือถ้าต้องการปลูกบ้านที่เน้นการ
อยู่อาศัยจริงๆ และไม่ต้องลงทุนมากนักก็ปลูกเป็นบ้าน
ไม้แบบตะวันตก 2 ชั้น แบบธรรมดาไม่มีการตกแต่ง
ด้วยลวดลายไม้ฉลุก็ยังพอที่จะอยู่ในกระแสแห่งความ
ทันสมัยได้เช่นเดียวกัน อย่างไรก็ดีเราไม่สามารถทราบ
ถึงปริมาณที่แท้จริงของจำนวนบ้านไม้เหล่านี้เนื่องจาก
ถูกรื้อทิ้งไปเสียมาก แต่จากหลักฐานการศึกษาของ
น. ณ ปากน้ำ ในหนังสือ “แบบแผนบ้านเรือนในสยาม”
ได้พบว่าเรือนไม้แบบตะวันตกที่มีการตกแต่งด้วย
ลวดลายไม้ฉลุนั้นได้รับความนิยมแพร่หลายมากใน
สมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 และรัชกาลที่ 6 บ้านเหล่านี้ปลูกอยู่
ในบริเวณกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ เช่น บริเวณพื้นที่ข้างถนน
ราชดำเนินกลาง ถนนดินสอ บางลำพู เป็นต้น ทั้งยัง
มีการแพร่หลายไปตามต่างจังหวัด เช่นจันทบุรี ชุมพร
สงขลา และทางภาคเหนือ เช่น เชียงใหม่ ลำปาง ตาก
แพร่ เป็นต้น
Gingerbread House
คำศัพท์ Gingerbread ตามความหมายพื้นฐานดั้งเดิม
หมายถึง “ขนมขิง” ซึ่งเป็นขนมฝรั่งผสมขิง เครื่องเทศ
หรือน้ำผึ้ง และเป็นขนมยอดนิยมประจำเทศกาล

The medium sized house was designed in the Romantic
style with a plain exterior. An outstanding feature of this
house was the turret that resembled a medieval fort with
pointed arch openings decorated with simple stringcourse
moldings instead of being elaborately ornamented. Its
design and construction were carried out by the same
team that worked on the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall
and although no specific names were given, it is implicit
that the team was Italian and most likely had Tamagno
as the main consultant.
Phraya Burutratana’s House is an example that clearly
illustrated the king’s intention to have high ranking officials,

เนื่องจากคนไทยแปลคำ Gingerbread มาจากคำสอง
คำคือ Ginger ซึ่งแปลว่า ขิง และ Bread ซึ่งแปลว่า
ขนมปัง ทั้งๆ ที่ขนมฝรั่ง Gingerbread นั้นเป็นขนมอบ
ซึ่งเป็นขนมที่แตกต่างจาก bread หรือขนมปังโดยสิ้นเชิง
เนื่องจาก Gingerbread หรือขนมขิงนั้นไม่มี yeast
หรือผงฟูเป็นส่วนผสมเลย
คำศัพท์ Gingerbread ทางสถาปัตยกรรมหมายถึง
การตกแต่งงานสถาปัตยกรรมอย่างหรูหรา หรือฟุ่มเฟือย
คำศัพท์นี้คนอเมริกันมักจะใช้เรียกงานสถาปัตยกรรม
แบบ “Stick Style” ซึ่งแพร่หลายในอเมริการาว ค.ศ.
1860 - 1870 ลักษณะเด่นคือ นิยมตกแต่งอาคารด้วย
องค์ประกอบไม้ มีทั้งอาคารประเภทสาธารณะและอาคาร
พักอาศัย บางครั้งก็ยังรวมถึงงานสถาปัตยกรรมแบบอื่น
ที่มิใช่งานแบบ “Stick Style” แต่ว่ามีรายละเอียดการ
ตกแต่งอาคารอย่างประณีตงดงามอีกด้วย
งานแบบ “Stick Style” ในอเมริกันนั้นมีลักษณะเด่น
คือ เป็นอาคารไม้โครงสร้าง Balloon Frame มีลักษณะ

Western style timber houses
Western way of living in a house meant arranging the
various functions and rooms all under one roof. The reason
that the middle class population began to live in western
style houses was probably due to their imitating the elite
by building timber houses in the style of the two-storeyed
masonry residences while the most popular design
considered to be fashionable, modern and eye-catching
at the time was the style that had perforated sawn-timber
decorations. Those who wanted a functional house for living
in at minimal cost, would build a two-storeyed western
style timber house without the elaborate decorations and
still be in trend. However, it is not possible to quantify the
number of these houses as many have been demolished
over time. Nevertheless from the study by Nor Na Paknam
in his book on the subject of houses in Siam, western style
timber houses with perforated timber decorations were very
