ได้ที่จะบังคับให้คนเป็นเช่นนั้น เพราะทุกคนมีรอยต่อ
ของ identity นับชนิดแทบไม่ถ้วนอยู่ในตัว มนุษย์ที่มี
รอยต่อของ identity แทบนับไม่ถ้วนชนิดเลย produce
คนคนหนึ่งที่ไม่เหมือนใครเลย คือวิธีที่มันมาต่อสัมผัส
สัมพันธ์กัน แต่ถ้าแยกเป็นส่วนก็จะมีส่วนที่เหมือนกัน
บ้างเป็นบางอย่าง เพราะฉะนั้นการบังคับให้ต้องเป็น
อย่างนี้อย่างนั้นเพียงอย่างเดียวจึงไร้สาระ รวมไปถึง
การบอกว่าอัตลักษณ์ของบ้านและสถาปัตยกรรมอย่างนี้
จึงจะเป็นอย่างนี้ สำหรับผมเลยเป็นเรื่องไร้สาระมาก
เพราะคิดและเชื่อเช่นนี้มีปัญหา 2 อย่าง อันดับแรกคือ
เข้าใจ identity ผิดอย่างร้ายแรง เพราะ identity ไม่ใช่
เรื่องของความเป็นหนึ่ง แต่เป็นเรื่องของความหลาก
หลาย ซึ่งเมื่อรวมกันแล้วกลายเป็นหน่วยๆ หนึ่ง ซึ่งไม่
สามารถหลอมรวมกันให้เป็นหนึ่งเดียวกันได้ชนิดไร้รอยต่อ
เพราะไม่เหมือนกัน หมายความว่าอาจจะรวมกันได้แต่
ก็ไม่เหมือนกัน ต่อให้มาจากบ้านเดียวกันเป็นพี่น้องกัน
พ่อแม่เดียวกันก็ต่างกัน แม้จะมีสิ่งที่เหมือนกันแต่ก็ต้อง
มีสิ่งที่ต่างกัน อันนี้เลยเป็นสิ่งที่น่าทึ่งมากสำหรับผม
ปัญหาอันที่สองคือ power ที่บังคับว่าคุณต้องเป็น
แบบนี้ คือมันบังคับกันไม่ได้ไง คือคนอาจจะยอมบ้าง
ในบางห้วงบางขณะ แต่ถ้าบังคับมากไปคนก็ไม่ยอม
เพราะการบังคับไปกระทบ identity ของคนคนนั้น เช่น
ผู้หญิงมุสลิมคลุมฮิญาบ ในสมัยหนึ่งรัฐบาลไทยได้ออก
กฎบังคับให้ผู้หญิงเหล่านี้ต้องถอดฮิญาบออกเพื่อถ่ายรูป
บัตรประชาชน ผลก็คือผู้หญิงมุสลิมจำนวนหนึ่งก็ไม่ไป
ทำบัตรประชาชน คือมีตัวเลือกว่าไม่ถอดคือไม่ถ่าย กับ
ถอดผ้าคลุมแล้วไปถ่าย แต่คุณคิดว่าคนที่ถอดผ้าฮิญาบ
มันเป็นตัวเขาหรือ รัฐต้องการตัวเขาอย่างที่เป็นจริงหรือ
ต้องการตัวเขาแบบลวงๆ ถ้าคำตอบคือคุณต้องการตัว
เขาจริงๆ คำสั่งแบบนี้ไร้สาระมาก

ย้ำว่า ของบางอย่างต้องคิดอะไรที่มีความยากมากกว่า
ปกติขึ้นมาบ้าง มันเป็นความจำเป็นสำหรับประเทศที่
เราคิดอะไรกันง่ายๆ เรียนขอให้อาจารย์ให้ความคิดเห็น
ตรงนี้เพิ่มเติมครับ ในประเด็นที่กำลังสนทนากันอยู่ว่า
ด้วยเรื่องของ geography เรื่องของ space เรื่องการ
ที่ทุกอย่างทำงานอยู่ร่วมกัน โดยผมอาจจะมีเรื่องของ
สถาปัตยกรรมเป็นตัวขับเคลื่อนครับ อยากให้อาจารย์
unit but can never be seamless because it contains
a bunch of different things. Even sisters or brothers
are not the same. There are common qualities that
are shared but there are also differences. The second
problem is using power in forcing people to be a certain
way. These things can’t be forced. People might give
in occasionally in some scenarios. But if you force
them too much, they are going to resist because their
identity is threatened. The Thai government used
to demand Muslim women to take off their hijabs to
take photos for official ID cards. The result is a lot
of Muslim women chose not to register for ID cards
because they didn’t want to take off their hijabs. Do
you think they are their true selves without the hijab?
The government wanted to see who they really were
or an illusory version of them? If the government
wanted them for who they were, then this rule was
utterly self-defeating.
Quijxote: One thing you said in your forum at Siam
Society is we need to start thinking about difficult
things more. It’s very important for our country because
we tend to gravitate towards simple ideas. Now that
we’re discussing how geography and space work
together, and in my agenda, driven by architecture,
why do you think it’s important that we have to start
thinking about complicated things?
Chaiwat: When you design a public buildings, you
think about essential basic functions like restaurants,
meeting rooms, toilets. The question that follows is
should we include something else that responds to the
changes in people’s needs? What about a religious
space? With new conditions included, designing the
space is more difficult. But if we don’t start thinking
about difficult things, there will be no improvements.
