บ้านเรือนถิ่นไทยในช่วงเจ็ดทศวรรษ 2489-2559

แน่ว่าราคาสูงกว่าเครื่องเรือนท้องตลาด แต่ถ้าหากว่าเราใช้
ชีวิตแบบสำรวมและมัธยัสถ์แล้วปัญหานี้คงหมดไป การก้าว
ข้ามธรณีประตูเรือนมีหลายคนเห็นว่า ไม่สะดวกและเปลืองแรง
แต่ก็มีบางคนเห็นว่าจุดนี้เป็นการออกกำลังขาไปในตัว และถ้า
ข้ามไม่ไหวธรณีประตูก็จะบอกให้เรารู้ว่าเราแก่แล้ว ห้องแต่งตัว
ของเดิมไม่มี เพราะสมัยนั้นเขาไม่แต่งตัวกันวุ่นวาย ชุดนุ่งห่ม
ก็มีแต่พอดี แต่เมื่อจำต้องมีที่สำหรับเรื่องนี้ ก็สามารถกั้นห้อง
ต่อจากห้องนอน บนบริเวณที่เราเรียกว่าชานได้
ห้องน้ำ ของเดิมแยกเป็นเรือนต่างหากมีการถ่ายเทลม
ตลอดเวลารวมทั้งแสงแดดที่มีอยู่อย่างพอเพียง ผู้ใช้ห้องน้ำ
ดูสวนและธรรมชาติภายนอกไม่อึดอัดทึบเช่นห้องน้ำปัจจุบัน
ซึ่งอยู่ในตัวเรือนใหญ่ แต่ถ้าอยากจะทำห้องน้ำให้ติดกับห้อง
นอนก็ย่อมจะทำได้ คือทำบนชานเรือนส่วนหนึ่งเช่นเดียวกับ
ห้องแต่งตัว (บ้านท่านนายก ม.ร.ว. คึกฤทธิ์ ปราโมชใช้วิธีนี้)
ทางเดินสู่เรือนจากที่จอดรถผ่านกรงนก เบื้องหลัง
คือต้นฝรั่ง ปลูกเพื่อเป็นอาหารของสัตว์ การไม่ใช้ยาฆ่าแมลง
ในบริเวณทำให้นกเข้ามากินเป็นประจำและร้องปลอบโยนเรา
ทุกวัน ข้างหน้าคือไผ่ตงซึ่งให้อาหารเป็นประจำในฤดูฝน
ประตูเข้าห้องพระซึ่งวางติดกับห้องนอนหน้าประตูห้อง
เขียนยันต์นกคุ้มกันไฟ เขียนโดยนายก้อน คนในสมัยรัชกาล
ที่ 5 เป็นเสน่ห์ส่วนหนึ่งเกิดเพราะอดีต เป็นสิ่งที่มนุษย์รักและ
แสวงหา อย่างน้อยเราได้เอกลักษณ์ของเราเอง และแน่ใจว่า
เราคือเหลนโหลนของคนที่เคยขี่ช้างพายเรือแถบลุ่มแม่น้ำ
เจ้าพระยา
บ้านกับต้นไม้ในประเทศร้อนชื้นอย่างเราเป็นสิ่งที่แยก
กันไม่ได้ ความงามของต้นไม้น้อยใหญ่พื้นเมืองเป็นสิ่งที่ให้
ความเป็นเฉพาะตัวแก่สถานที่ อาคารไม่ใช่พระเอกแต่ผู้เดียว
บทบาทของต้นไม้จะต้องเข้ามาร่วมแสดงด้วย ต้นไม้เมืองร้อน
พันธุ์พื้นเมืองขึ้นสะพรั่งเพราะทนทานต่อโรค,แข็งแรง,หาง่าย
และราคาเยา เบื้องหน้าคือต้นลานเพิ่งจะเริ่มตั้งรูป เมื่อโตเต็มที่
จะให้รูปทรงที่สง่าและเป็นปึกแผ่น เรือนส่วนที่เห็นเป็นที่เก็บ
หนังสือและที่พักแขกผู้มาเยี่ยม
เรือนหนังสือและที่พักแขก ใช้เป็นที่เก็บศิลปะชาวบ้าน
ด้วยแท่นนั่งหน้าประตูวางยาวตลอดตัวเรือน เปิดออกได้
สำหรับเก็บของ แท่นนี้ใช้สำหรับเหยียบก้าวเข้าเรือน ที่เป็น
เช่นนี้เพราะกรอบธรณีประตูของเรือนไทยเดิมเขาทำไว้สูง ใน
สมัยก่อนใช้กับเด็กอ่อนที่เลี้ยงในห้อง ไม่ให้ออกมา และช่วย
สร้างความมิดชิดพอสมควรให้แก่เจ้าของเรือน
นอกชานร้านดอกไม้ซึ่งใช้คอนกรีตแทนพื้นไม้ เพราะไม้
ในปัจจุบันเนื้ออ่อนและจำเป็นจะต้องใช้ห้องใต้ถุนนอกชาน
ในยามค่ำคืน เนื้อที่บนนี้ให้ความรู้สึกที่เปิดโล่งรับลมเย็นและ
น้ำค้างในยามเดือนหงาย เป็นที่ที่งามที่สุด เงาที่ทอดจากต้น
ทองหลางใหญ่ลงมาบนพื้นแปรสภาพดูราวกับงานจิตรกรรม
ต้นทองหลางปลูกเอาไว้เสียดกับเรือน ช่วยตรึงไนโตรเจนใน
ดิน และให้ใบอ่อนเป็นอาหาร

The solution is custom-made furniture which costs more.
But should we live an appeased and provident life, this
will not be a problem. Some say that high thresholds are
inconvenient and too strenuous. Some argue it’s a good
exercise and a great indicator if we’re getting too old.
There’s no dressing room because people did not trouble
themselves too much with clothing back then. But we can
always build one next to the bedroom on the terrace.
In the past, bathrooms were separated from the
main house. It’s quite a pleasant thing to do business in
good ventilation, with ample sunlight, among surrounding
gardens, as opposed to closed-off stuffy bathrooms in
the house nowadays. But to build a bathroom next to the
bedroom is also possible.
On the way to garage, you will walk past a birdcage
hung in front of a guava tree meant as token for animals.
Because no chemicals are used, birds come feed on
guavas everyday while comforting us with their songs.
Up ahead are bamboo groves that give us food every
rainy season.
Prayer room is next to the bedroom. On the door
hangs a talisman written by Mr.Gon since King Rama V
period. We love and long for the past because it’s a part
of who we are. It reminds us that we are the descendants
of people who rode on boats and elephants along the
Chaopraya river.
Houses and trees in a tropical country like Thailand
are inseparable. Native trees give such uniqueness to
the structure. They thrive and flourish so well because
they’re strong, robust, easy to find, and cheap. In front
of the house is a talipot palm that is hoped to boast its
magnificent form when fully grown. That part of the house
is a library and a guest bedroom.
It is also an area that we display local art and crafts. A
short stool in front of the door can be opened as storage.
The stool is for stepping on because the threshold was
so high in order to keep babies from crawling out of the
room and provide privacy.
Terrace was made with concrete instead of wood
because there’s not much hardwood left nowadays and
we need to use the room underneath. The terrace at
night time when the moon shines is breezy, airy and
simply the most beautiful place. The big tree above casts
wiggling shadows like a painting on the floor.
