บ้านเรือนถิ่นไทยในช่วงเจ็ดทศวรรษ 2489-2559

อาจารย์กิจโชติ: สืบเนื่องจากบทความที่อาจารย์
ได้มอบให้ บ้านเป็นสัญลักษณ์สำคัญที่ทำหน้าที่รองรับ
ความสัมพันธ์อันแสดงออกถึงความเป็นบ้าน เรียนขอให้
อาจารย์ขยายความดังกล่าวเพิ่มเติมครับ ถึงความเป็น
สัญลักษณ์ของบ้านในเชิงรัฐศาสตร์นั้นมีนัยยะที่สำคัญ
หรือมีประเด็นที่น่าสนใจอย่างไรครับ
อาจารย์ชัยวัฒน์: มีบทสนทนาระหว่าง Diogenes
Laertius กับ เพลโต ปรากฏอยู่ใน The lives and
opinions of eminent philosophers (1853) ตอนหนึ่ง
Diogenes กล่าวกับเพลโตว่า “ท่านชอบพูดเรื่องความ
เป็นโต๊ะกับความเป็นถ้วย แต่สิ่งที่ฉันเห็นมีแต่โต๊ะกับถ้วย”
เพลโตก็ตอบว่า “ถูกแล้ว ท่านเห็นเพียงโต๊ะกับถ้วย เพราะ
การจะเห็นโต๊ะกับถ้วยได้ต้องใช้ตา แต่การจะเห็น “ความ
เป็นโต๊ะ” กับ “ความเป็นถ้วย” ได้ต้องใช้ปัญญา ซึ่งท่านมี
ตาแต่ไม่มีปัญญาจึงไม่เห็น” ผมลองคิดว่า จริงๆ แล้วงาน
สถาปัตยกรรมตามที่ผมเข้าใจ ตัวบ้านมาที่หลังความเป็น
บ้าน เพราะฉะนั้นความมหัศจรรย์ของวิชาสถาปัตยกรรม
ในความเห็นของคนนอกอย่างผม คืออะไรบางอย่าง
ซึ่งสามารถจะใส่ จินตนาการ imagination, ความคิด
สร้างสรรค์ Creativity และ สิ่งที่ “สมบูรณ์” เป็นรอยต่อ
ระหว่างความเป็นโต๊ะกับโต๊ะ ความเป็นถ้วยกับถ้วย
ความเป็นบ้านกับบ้าน คือเราต้องใช้ทั้งสองอย่างคือ
สายตาและปัญญา งานที่คณะทำงานทำมานั้นส่วนใหญ่
ไปเน้นทางสายตามากไปหน่อยหรือไม่?
อาจารย์กิจโชติ: คือแต่เดิมเวลาทำวิจัยนะครับ
ส่วนใหญ่จะเน้นไปทางสายตา เน้นรูปแบบของการ
ออกแบบ งานชิ้นนี้ตามวัตถุประสงค์แล้วนั้น คือความ
พยายามที่จะเข้าถึงสิ่งที่อยู่นอกเหนือรูปแบบของบ้าน
ที่เป็นผลมาจากการออกแบบ เพื่อให้เข้าถึงความเป็น
บ้านมากขึ้นครับ
อาจารย์ชัยวัฒน์: เพราะฉะนั้นพอผมเห็นตาราง
ที่ทางคณะทำงานส่งมา ผมก็เลยกังวลเล็กน้อย เพราะ
รู้สึกว่าผมไม่ได้พูดเรื่องบ้าน คือสิ่งที่เห็นจากงานของ
คณะทำงานเท่าที่ผมรู ้สึกค่อนข้างเป็นงานเชิงประจักษ์
คือมันมีบ้านจริงๆ มีเงื่อนไขจริงๆ และจัดวางบ้านไว้ใน
บริบททางประวัติศาสตร์ งานของผมจะฉีกออกไปเล็ก
น้อย เพราะไม่ได้วางไว้บนประวัติศาสตร์ แต่วางไว้ใน
ความคิดว่า ตกลงไม่ว่าประวัติศาสตร์จะเป็นอย่างไรใน
70 ปีแห่งรัชสมัยของในหลวง ร.9 แต่ความเป็นบ้าน
Quijxote: From your article, a house is an important
symbol that supports relationships that show the
essence of a house. Could you explain further about
the significance of a house as a symbol in the societal
context? What are the interesting facts in your view?
Chaiwat: In The Lives and Opinions of Eminent
Philosophers (1853), there is a conversation between
Diogenes Laertius and Plato where Diogenes once
said to Plato that: “You often talk about tablesness
and cupness. But I only see a table and a cup”. Plato
responded: “That’s right. You only see a table and a
cup because it takes eyes to see a table and a cup.
But to see tableness and cupness, it takes wisdom.
You only have eyes but no wisdom, hence, you do
not see it.” From my understanding, houseness
comes before a house. So from the perspective of an
outsider like myself, the magic of architecture is how
you use imagination and creativity to fulfill the lines
between a table and tableness, a cup and cupness,
or a house and houseness. And that takes both eyes
and wisdom. The question is does this project focus
too much on what can be seen with the eyes?
Quijxote: In the past when we do research, we
focused on forms and what can be seen with the
eyes. But this work is an attempt to explore beyond
the form of a house or design and focus more on
the houseness.
Chaiwat: That’s why I became a little worried
when the agenda was sent to me. I felt that I was
not talking about the actual house. But what was
sent to me is quite empirical in the sense that there
are actual houses and actual conditions. And these
houses exist in historical contexts. My work is slightly
