an idea, an important question is what is our positioning
for this proposal? And what is the scale? If we want
to see considerable change, how strongly do we want
to propose it? For example, I used to be a member of
the National Reconciliation Commission under former
Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun. I often got criticized
for my interviews. People asked me why I didn’t say
it like this or like that. My answer was I was not in the
position to say those things. Because of that, we could
not expect many changes. So scale and positioning
are very important when it comes to work.
Quijxote: You used to talk about unitary identity in
one of your forums. Do you think it exists in architecture?
Can you elaborate a bit more on the idea?
Chaiwat: Our identity never exists unitarily. If I
ask myself who am I? I am a man in my sixties, an
old man from an official standard. I should be retired
by now. I am a college professor. I write books
occasionally. I went to Assumption College. I am a
Muslim and a Thai. All those things combine to make
me this “Chaiwat”. So the concept of unitary identity
in a person or society is one of the most nonsensical
and ridiculous things in political theory. It’s impossible
to force that on people. Everyone has countless
identities patched inside. And those pieces produce
individuals that are never the same as anyone else.
If isolated, some pieces might be similar but once
hemmed together, it always creates uniqueness. To
brand it as this or that is ridiculous. To me, confining
the identity or a house to a certain genre is also
ridiculous. There are 2 problems with this kind of
assumption. First, it’s a serious misunderstanding of
the word identity. Because identity is never a singular
thing. It’s about diversity. It can be molded into one
