“เมือง”ของอเล็กซานเดอร์มหาราช (356-323
ก่อนคริสตกาล)
มาคิอาเวลลี (ค.ศ. 1469-1527) เป็นนักปรัชญา
มีชื่อเสียงทั่วโลกจากงานเขียนทางการเมืองเรื่อง
The Prince (1513) หรือ เจ้าผู้ปกครอง อันลือเลื่อง
ของเขา แต่งานเขียนทางปรัชญาการเมืองยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุด
ของเขาอาจคือหนังสืออีกเล่มหนึ่งที่โลกรู้จักน้อยกว่า
หนังสือเล่มนั้นชื่อ The Discourses ที่เขาใช้เวลาเขียน
ราว 6 ปี ในขณะที่ The Prince ใช้เวลาเขียน 6 เดือน
และ หนังสือเล่มนี้ก็ยาวกว่า เจ้าผู้ปกครองราว 6 เท่า
ใน The Discourses (เล่มที่ 1 บทที่ 1 ย่อหน้าที่ 5)
มาคิอาเวลลีเขียนถึงอเล็กซานเดอร์มหาราชไว้ตอน
หนึ่งว่า เมื่อพระเจ้าอเล็กซานเดอร์ประสงค์จะสร้างนคร
เพื่อเป็นประจักษ์พยานถึงพระสิริรุ่งโรจน์ของพระองค์
สถาปนิกผู้ยิ่งใหญ่แห่งยุคคือ Deinocrates ทูลพระองค์
ว่า เขาสามารถออกแบบสร้างเมืองอันยิ่งใหญ่บนยอดเขา
Athos ซึ่งนอกจากท่านสถาปนิกจะออกแบบให้เมือง
เข้มแข็งสุดยอดแล้ว ยังตั้งใจจะออกแบบเมืองนี้ให้
คล้ายรูปทรงมนุษย์อันแสนอัศจรรย์และจะเป็นเมืองหา
ยากในโลกคู่ควรกับพระอิสริยยศของจอมกษัตริย์อย่างอ
เล็กซานเดอร์ เมื่อได้ฟังความคิดของสถาปนิก มหาราช
จึงทรงถามเขาว่า แล้วประชาชนชาวเมืองเขาจะอยู่กัน
อย่างไร สถาปนิกชะงัก แล้วตอบว่า ยังไม่ได้คิดเรื่อง
นั้น เมื่อได้ทรงฟังค ำตอบ อเล็กซานเดอร์มหาราชทรงพระ
สรวล และไม่มองยอดเขาอีกเลย แต่ทรงสร้างเมืองใหม่
ขึ้นในที่ราบริมทะเล ใกล้ลำน้ำใหญ่โดยมีหัวใจอยู่ที่การ
ดำรงชีวิตที่ดีของผู้คนพลเมือง
และเมือง Alexandria ก็ถูกสร้างขึ้นริมทะเล
เมดิเตอร์เรเนียน ใกล้แม่น้ำไนล์
“บ้าน” กับความมั่นคงของ “เมือง”
อริสโตเติลกล่าวถึงหน่วยทางการเมืองที่เรียกว่า
polis คำนี้มักแปลกันว่า “รัฐ” แต่ข้าพเจ้ามักใช้คำว่า
“สังคมการเมือง” เพราะกล่าวให้ถึงที่สุด “รัฐ” ในความ
หมายที่เข้าใจกันเวลานี้ยังไม่เกิดเมื่อสมัยกรีก ที่จริงค ำ
นี้ใกล้กับคำว่า “เมือง” (city) มากกว่า “รัฐ” เพราะกรีก
significant political philosophy work is The Discourses
(1513-1518) which took him 6 years to write, compared
to 6 months used to write The Prince. It is also lesser
known, among other things, perhaps because of its length
which is 6 times longer than that of The Prince.
In the beginning of The Discourses, Machiavelli told
a story about Alexander the Great (Book I, Chapter 1,
paragraph 5).
When Alexander the Great (356-323 B.C.) wanted to
build a city as an evident of his glory, Deinocrates- the
royal architect told him that he could design a great city
on top of Mount Athos. This city would be extremely strong.
Moreover, he planned to design the city in a human form,
most wondrous and a rarity in the world befitting the
honor of the world conqueror such as Alexander. Hearing
the words of the architect, Alexander asked how his people
would live in such a city. The architect was taken aback
and replied that he had not thought about this.
Hearing the architect’s answer, Alexander laughed
and never looked back at the mountain, nor at the plan
for a city with a human form.
Later a new city was built in his name on a plain, by
the sea and close to a great river. It was to be a city with
the good life of a people as its heart.
And Alexandria was built by the Mediterranean, close
to the River Nile.
“HOME” AND “CITY” SECURITY
Aristotle uses the term polis for his most important
political unit. This term is commonly translated as “state”.
But I would rather use the term “political society” because
strictly speaking the “state” as we know it was a later
invention. The word polis is closer to the term “city”
since the main Greek political formation of the time was
“city-state”. But the point here is that: using Aristotle’s
thought as an entry point, one could think of a “city” or
a “political society” through the role a “home” plays in
it. This would mean that it is human relationship in a
home that is most crucial for sustaining a household,
