การส่งออกที่ได้นั้นสัมพันธ์กันกับการขยายที่ดิน
แต่ผลผลิตของภาคการเกษตรยังคงอยู่ในอัตราที่ต่ำ
นอกเหนือไปจากการก่อสร้างโครงสร้างพื้นฐาน
ผู้บุกเบิกเหล่านี้ได้รับความช่วยเหลือเล็กๆ น้อยๆ

the capability to provide water during the dry season to a
substantial proportion of the command area. By the end
of the 1960s, dry season cultivation in the Central Plains
began to take off, helped by the new varieties of rice that
were developed in the Philippines by the International Rice
Research Institute. 4
A consequence of agricultural expansion was the
continual growth of the exports and the increasing strength
of the baht internationally. We shall return to an
assessment of whether the growth eventually benefitted
the men and women who labored to clear the forests and
farm the lands. There was no doubt however that the
agricultural sector ended up absorbing a considerable
number of people, and kept Thailand rural for the time
being. This availability of land and the growth in agricultural
production kept the Thai rate of urbanization low, compared
to other countries at the same level of income. Also, almost
uniquely among its Asian neighbours, each Thai farmer
had, on average, a larger parcel of land to work with in
1980 that he had in 1960.

Agricultural growth was ultimately responsible for the
overall growth of the economy. But the rapid expansion
of the economy during the 1960s eventually undid the
Sarit system of government. This system rested on the
exercise of absolute power, first by Sarit, and on his death
by his milder successor, Field Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn.
But the very economic growth that this regime fostered
led to the emergence of a middle class as well as a class
of intellectuals that did not feel beholden to the government.
This class of intellectuals was also a creation of the reforms
and expansion of the universities, which saw a considerable
growth in the number of full-time lecturers. They viewed
the Thanom regime as increasingly anachronistic. In
retrospect, the collapse of the regime in the student uprising
in October 1973 looks inevitable, but at the time the surprise
was in its suddenness.
