พ.ศ. 2453 - 2468) ทรงเป็นพระมหากษัตริย์ไทย
พระองค์แรกที่ทรงได้รับการศึกษาจากประเทศอังกฤษ
ดังนั้นจึงทรงทราบดีถึงความแตกต่างของพื้นฐานการศึกษา
ของสยามกับโลกตะวันตก และทรงเป็นพระมหากษัตริย์
แห่งราชวงศ์จักรีพระองค์แรกที่มิได้ทรงสถาปนาวัดประจำ
รัชกาล เนื่องจากทรงมีพระราชดำริว่าวัดหลวงนั้นมีมากแล้ว
จึงทรงให้ความสำคัญกับการสร้างโรงเรียนเพื่อเป็นการ
บำรุงการศึกษาของชาติเป็นหลัก ในปีแรกของรัชกาล
คือในวันที่ 29 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2453 ได้ทรงสถาปนา
โรงเรียนมหาดเล็กหลวงขึ้น ซึ่งต่อมาพระบาทสมเด็จ
พระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวได้พระราชทานนามว่า “โรงเรียน
วชิราวุธวิทยาลัย” สำหรับการศึกษาระดับอุดมศึกษานั้น
ก็ได้ทรงสถาปนา “จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย” ขึ้นเป็น
มหาวิทยาลัยแห่งแรกของสยาม เมื่อวันที่ 26 มีนาคม
พ.ศ. 2459 (พ.ศ. 2460 ตามปฏิทินสากล) และได้เริ่ม
มีการจัดการศึกษาภาคบังคับ 15 โดยได้ประกาศพระราช
บัญญัติประถมศึกษาเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2464
นอกจากพระราชภารกิจด้านการพัฒนาการศึกษาแล้ว
ความเข้าพระทัยเรื่องการเมืองของมหาอำนาจตะวันตก
ก็น่าจะเป็นเหตุหนึ่งที่ทำให้ทรงนำสยามเข้าร่วมกับ
unusual appearance. Built between 1876 and 1878, the
Neo-Gothic style temple was designed by Joachim Grassi
who cleverly amalgamated certain traditional Buddhist
values into his work. For example, he turned the rear end
of the Gothic church-plan into an entrance that faces east
according to the local belief and vice-versa whereby the
entrance with the bell tower in front according to western
planning, becomes the rear end of the building instead.
The bell tower houses Buddha’s relics enshrined at the
topmost part and therefore the structure itself assumes
the role of a chedi or sacred pagoda according to the local
Buddhist tradition.
King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) who reigned from 1910 to
1925, was the first Siamese king to have been educated in
England and was therefore well aware of the differences
between Siam’s education system and that of the Western
world. He was also the first monarch of the House of Chakri
who did not have a temple accorded to his reign due to
his opinion that there were already enough royal temples

ประเทศต่างๆ ตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2463 จนกระทั่งประสบผล
สำเร็จโดยสมบูรณ์ใน พ.ศ. 2479
สำหรับการปกครองในระบอบสมบูรณาญาสิทธิราชย์
นั้น พระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรง
ตระหนักดีว่าในสังคมตะวันตกมีแนวคิดต่อต้านระบอบดัง
กล่าวมาเป็นเวลานาน และต้องการให้มีการเปลี่ยนแปลง
ระบอบการปกครองไปสู่ระบอบที่ราษฎรมีส่วนร่วมในการ
ปกครองมากยิ่งขึ้น และในช่วงสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 - รัชกาล
ที่ 6 ก็ได้เกิดการปฏิวัติเพื่อล้มล้างระบอบกษัตริย์ใน
หลายประเทศ เช่น การปฏิวัติในตุรกี ใน พ.ศ. 2451
การปฏิวัติในเมืองจีนนำโดย ดร.ซุน ยัด เซ็น ใน พ.ศ.
2454 และการปฏิวัติล้มราชวงศ์โรมานอฟใน พ.ศ. 2460
ส่วนในสยามก็ได้มีความพยายามที่จะเปลี่ยนแปลงการ
ปกครองไปสู่ระบอบประชาธิปไตยใน พ.ศ. 2455 หรือ
เรียกว่า “กบฏ ร.ศ. 130” แต่คณะผู้ก่อการซึ่งประกอบด้วย

Rama VI established a royal pages school which he later
named Vajiravudh College. After that, at the level of tertiary
education, established Chulalongkorn University on March
26, 1916 (1917 international calendar) as the first university
in the kingdom. Subsequent to that, primary education was
made compulsory under a legislation introduced in 1921 15 .
In addition to his concerns with developing the country’s
education system, Rama VI’s understanding of the politics
practiced by great western power nations was one of the
factors that led Siam to join the alliance forces during the
First World War, as declared on July 22, 1917. After the
War, he began negotiating amendments to extraterritorial
rights agreement with various countries from 1920 onwards
until it was finally concluded in 1936.
As far as the absolute monarchy system was
concerned, the king was also well aware that Western
countries have long been opposed to such system and
