Restoration of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha
In this project, the king’s elder brother, Prince Nakorn
Sawan Voraphinit was the head of the restoration committee,
and Chaophraya Voraphong Phiphat was in charge of all
works requiring technical tradesmen and artisan skills.
The restoration process began in 1928 and from a list
of nineteen items proposed by Chaophraya Voraphong
Phiphat, the committee chose to restore four major items
that were in highly deteriorated conditions. These were
the ubosot, the gallery and its mural paintings, the open
pavilions, and Hor Phra Monthien Dharma building.
All four items had the same technical problems
concerning dilapidated wooden roof structures that needed
to be replaced in addition to replacing the roofing materials,
and certain parts of the building structures also needed
to be strengthened with reinforced concrete. As for the
restoration of the mural paintings, this was considered to
be a major undertaking to conserve the valuable traditional
artwork and therefore every known highly skilled craftsmen
were recruited to carry out the task. The total cost of the
Construction of Rama I Memorial Bridge
This project involved erecting a monument to Rama I
and constructing an iron bridge that crosses Chao Phraya
River to link Bangkok on the one side with Thonburi on
the other. 40 The undertaking was considered to be the first
major work of architectural engineering and costed four
million Baht altogether.
The monument itself has a tripled-life-size seated
bronze statue of Rama I sculpted by Corrado Feroci (Silpa
Bhirasri). The architectural components of the monument
which are the podium and the background wall, were
designed by Prince Narisara Nuvadtivongse who was
the architect. The wall was designed in the style of a
Palladian façade with three parts. The central part, which
is directly behind the royal statue, is higher and wider than
the other two both of which have the same dimensions.
The part directly behind the statue has a surface plane of
the wall slightly recessed like a shallow niche to further
