บ้านเรือนถิ่นไทยในช่วงเจ็ดทศวรรษ 2489-2559

เรือนขนม (ปัง) ขิง คำศัพท์ “Gingerbread” ในทาง
สถาปัตยกรรมนี้แพร่หลายเข้ามาในเมืองไทยอย่างไร
และเข้ามาเมื่อใดไม่มีหลักฐานแน่ชัด แต่น่าจะเข้ามา
ภายหลังสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง อย่างไรก็ดีการแพร่หลาย
ของคำว่า “Gingerbread” ในเมืองไทยน่าจะเกิดจาก
หนังสือเรื่อง “แบบแผนบ้านเรือนในสยาม” เขียนโดย
น. ณ ปากน้ำ ตีพิมพ์ครั้งแรกใน พ.ศ. 2531 และล่าสุด
เป็นการตีพิมพ์ครั้งที่ 6 ใน พ.ศ. 2555 จุดมุ่งหมายใน
การเขียนนั้น ผู้เขียนอธิบายในหน้า 9 ว่า “...หนังสือ
เล่มนี้มีจุดประสงค์จะพรรณนาถึงเรือนไทยฝาปะกนกับ
เรือนปั้นหยา และเรือนมะนิลา ทั้งการตกแต่งลวดลาย
ขนมปังขิงเป็นเรื่องสำคัญ...” หนังสือดังกล่าวผู้เขียนได้
ใช้เวลาเก็บรวบรวมภาพอาคารที่ตกแต่งด้วยลวดลาย
ไม้ฉลุมาตั้งแต่ราว พ.ศ. 2500 จึงเป็นเอกสารสำคัญ
ที่รวบรวมข้อมูลภาพถ่ายอาคารที่ตกแต่งด้วยลวดลาย
ไม้ฉลุเอาไว้ได้มากที่สุด ส่วนคำอธิบายเกี่ยวกับคำศัพท์
Gingerbread นั้น น. ณ ปากน้ำ เขียนว่า
“จากเรือนปั้นหยาได้วิวัฒนาการมาเป็นเรือน
มะนิลา คือบางส่วนเป็นเรือนหลังคาปั้นหยา

From the apparent interest and accumulation of
information on Gingerbread Houses in the past, it may
be assumed that the word “Gingerbread” in connection
with architecture originated with the Americans and later
became widespread up until the present day (2018) in which
it has been accepted and used by professional architects
as well as those in the academic circles around the world.
Gingerbread (style) houses in Siam
There is no clear evidence as to how or when exactly
the term “Gingerbread” in connection with architecture
came to be adopted in Thailand. But most likely, it would
have been after the Second World War. However, it might
be said that the term, translated into Thai as Khanompang

Bread) แพร่เข้ามาด้วย ลักษณะเรือนขนมปังขิงนี้
เป็นชื่อเรียกสากลทับศัพท์ว่า จินเจอร์ เบรด
อันมีที่มาจากขนมปังขิงสมัยโบราณของชาว
ตะวันตก ซึ่งตกแต่งหรูหราฟู่ฟ่า มีครีบระบาย
แพรวพราว เรือนแบบนี้ได้พบเห็นจากหนังสือ
แมกกาซีนต่างประเทศ...”
“ที่พม่าบ้านเรือนใกล้สนามบินร่างกุ้งยังคงเต็ม
ไปด้วยบ้านแบบขนมปังขิงอยู่สมัยเมื่อ ๑๐ หรือ
๒๐ ปีมาแล้ว ในยุโรปตามประเทศต่างๆ หาดู
ได้ยาก ด้วยบ้านแบบนี้ส่วนใหญ่จะสร้างด้วยไม้
มีการฉลุครีบที่หน้าจั่วกับเชิงหลังคาอย่าง
ละเอียด ย่อมผุพังหรือถูกรื้อถอนไปเสียหมด
แม้ในเมืองไทยก็ถูกรื้อถอนเปลี่ยนแปลงไป
เสียมากต่อมาก ต่อไปอีกไม่ถึง ๑๐ ปี ก็อาจจะ
ค่อยๆ หมดไป”
“เรือนมะนิลาก็ดี เรือนขนมปังขิงก็ดี ซึ่ง
Khing, was popularized to a certain extent by Nor Na
Paknam in his book on Houses in Siam, first published
in 1988. The author himself explained (on page 9) that:
“...this book intends primarily to provide a
description of the wooden Thai houses that have
paneled walls with Manila or hipped roofs, and
decorated with Ginger Bread style ornamentation...”
The pictures of these houses decorated with perforated
sawn-timber detailing in the book, were taken and collected
since 1957. Therefore this is a valuable documentation
and source of information containing a large number of
rare images. In his book, the author also explained (in
Thai) about the term “gingerbread” to the following effect:
“From houses with hipped roofs, the trend
gradually evolved into the Manila style that had
gabled-hip (or gambrel) roofs. The period in which
the Manila style (the influence of which probably
came from the City of Manila) became popular,
was around the same time as the Ginger Bread
style. This Ginger Bread style, to use the English
180
