to believe in miracles. My grandmother who lived
during his reign told me about a fire in Chinatown
(Sampeng). The King put out the fire simply just by
raising and waving his sword. Think about it. This
person who led the country to modernism is the
same one people believed that he could put out the
fire with his royal sword. This is so interesting. He
knew who he was. He lived in both worlds. He could
don western attire as comfortably as Thai garments.
It shows that these two things can co-exist, which
is not quite the case in King Rama IX period. I think
it’s because the role of the King in the country’s
development had changed. State structure is no longer
the same as during King Rama V’s time. The regime
had changed to constitutional monarchy. The King
had to be under the constitution. Other characters
had to act along scripts given by the government at
the time, directed by a big player like the US. New
knowledge was formulated into economic development
strategies. King Rama V sent his children to study
abroad but I think none of them studied economics.
But in the realm of King Rama IX, people started to
go abroad studying a wider range of subjects including
economics as a result of the revolution. Now that the
time had passed, it became less and less relevant
from the postmodern perspective.
Quijxote: Do you think it’s consistent with modern
and postmodern movements that happen in other parts
of the world? That the 50s and 60s are defined as
modern, 80s as postmodern and 90s as deconstruction.
Chaiwat: I’m a bit reluctant to define things with
these terms. Because if I’m a Hindu, these concepts
won’t apply. In Hindu culture, Shiva and Uma sometimes
are considered as one. Merging things or blurring
