ทำด้วยไม้ไผ่ ... ”
ท่านยังอธิบายอีกว่าบ้านไม้ไผ่นั้นมักจะไฟไหม้บ่อย
ครั้ง แต่เมื่อถูกไฟไหม้ ญาติพี่น้องก็จะมาช่วยกันสร้าง
ขึ้นใหม่ได้ภายในเวลา 7 - 8 วัน “...ด้วยน้ำใจ...”
คณะผู้เผยแผ่ศาสนานั้น นอกจากบาทหลวงชาว
ฝรั่งเศสแล้วยังมีคณะผู้สอนศาสนาชาวอเมริกัน ซึ่งก็
เริ่มเข้ามากรุงเทพฯ ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 3 เช่นกัน หมอ
สอนศาสนาคนสำคัญคนหนึ่งได้แก่ นายแพทย์บรัดเลย์
(Dr. Dan Beach Bradley) ซึ่งเป็นผู้ที่เริ่มต้นการพิมพ์
และการผ่าตัดเป็นครั้งแรกในประเทศสยาม และบ้านที่
คนอเมริกันเรียกกันว่า บ้านแบบโคโลเนียล (Colonial
House) นั้นก็เริ่มปรากฏขึ้นในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 3 นี้เอง
เช่น บ้านของนายแพทย์บรัดเลย์ เป็นต้น
บ้านแบบโคโลเนียลที่คณะมิชชันนารีอเมริกันเริ่ม
นำมาปลูกในกรุงเทพฯ นั้น เป็นบ้านสองชั้น มีระเบียง
โดยรอบเพื่อหลบร้อน โครงสร้างไม้ หรือไม้ผสมก่ออิฐ
หลังคาทรงปั้นหยาหรือทรงจั่ว บ้านแบบนี้คนอเมริกัน
ceramic tiles, are outstanding against the sky. The pagoda’s
golden tips and the multicolored decorative tiles are radiant
like rainbows. There are hundreds of floating shops and
houses along both sides of the river while attractive-looking
boats ferry across to and fro along its winding path. Forts
are painted white as snow and the city has many towers
and gates. There are canals everywhere. Speared tips of
the Grand Palace roofs can be seen from all directions.
There are buildings of Chinese, Indian, and European
styles, and people are dressed differently according to their
nationalities. You can hear the sound of music and singing
from playhouses, while city people moving about in their
daily lives are all just fascinating for foreigners to watch.
There is not a single motorcar in Bangkok, as everyone
travels by water. Rivers and canals are like bustling streets.
Only in downtown and market areas will you find roads
paved with large bricks.
There are 3 types of houses in Bangkok. The first is
those elegantly built with bricks, the second is the timber
houses, and the third is the houses of impoverished people,

Orleans Louisiana Missouri เป็นต้น บ้านที่มีลักษณะ
คล้ายคลึงกัน และสร้างขึ้นร่วมสมัยกันในสิงคโปร์ ซึ่ง
เป็นอาณานิคมของอังกฤษนั้น เรียกว่าบ้านบังกะโล
(Bungalow)
การเซ็นสัญญาทางพระราชไมตรีและการพาณิชย์กับ
สหราชอาณาจักรใน พ.ศ. 2369 และกับสหรัฐอเมริกา
ใน พ.ศ. 2376 นั้น ถือเป็นการรุกคืบหน้าทางการทูต
ครั้งแรก แต่ในความเป็นจริงนั้น ทั้งสองประเทศยังไม่มี
ความพอใจในวิธีการผูกขาดการค้าขายของสยาม และ
เริ่มรุกทางการทูตอีกครั้งหนึ่งโดยสหรัฐอเมริกาได้ส่ง
ทูตชื่อ โจเซฟ บัลเลสเตีย เข้ามาใน พ.ศ. 2393 เพื่อ
เจรจาขอให้สยามปรับปรุงเรื่องการเก็บภาษีอากร และ
ยังขอตั้งสถานกงสุลประจำกรุงเทพฯ ด้วย แต่ขุนนาง
สยามไม่พอใจพฤติกรรมของทูตอเมริกัน จึงไม่ยอม
เจรจาด้วย บัลเลสเตียจึงเดินทางออกจากสยามไป
เมื่อเดือนเมษายน พ.ศ. 2393 หลังจากนั้น 4 เดือน
ทางสหราชอาณาจักรก็ส่งเซอร์เจมส์ บรู๊คส์ เข้ามายัง
ราชสำนักสยามเพื่อขอเจรจาแก้ไขสัญญาเดิมที่ทำไว้
โดยขอยกเว้นภาษีการค้าหลายข้อ ที่สำคัญคือ ขอตั้ง

Pallegoix also explained that bamboo houses were
often destroyed by fires but rebuilt within only 7-8 days with
help from “the kindness” of family members and friends.
Aside from the French, a number of American
missionaries also started coming to Bangkok in the period
of Rama III. One such person was Dr. Dan Beach Bradley
who became highly famous and was the first person to
introduce surgery, as well as printing, to Siam. Dr. Bradley’s
house was in the style referred to by the Americans as
“colonial house” which first appeared in Bangkok around
this period.
The colonial houses built by American missionaries
were two-storeyed houses with roofed veranda at the
ground level to protect the interior from the heat of the
sun in order to provide inside comfort. The structure was
built of timber or combination of timber and brick masonry,
with hip or gable roof. The Americans in fact called it the
French Colonial style as it was developed in the regions
that were formerly French colonies in the United States
