of public transport at the time, and electric trams served
the people of Bangkok from then on until its operation
ended in 1968.
Another important change in the means of transportation
was the use of motorcars which appeared around the period
before 1904. The first person to bring a motorcar into the
country for use in Bangkok was a foreigner who later sold
it to Field Marshal Chaophraya Surasakdi Montri (Joem
Saeng-xuto), who then became the first Siamese person
to own a private automobile. Following that, in 1904, the
king ordered a Mercedes-Benz 28HP to be used as the
first royal automobile and in 1905, another Mercedes-Benz
was ordered. Since then motorcars became widespread
amongst members of the royal family, nobilities, and
wealthy merchants in general. There were up to 251 cars
in Bangkok during the period of Rama V and according to
the trend, automobiles came to play an important role in
travelling as well as in the way of life and values adopted
by people in the society during subsequent periods.
of the concept and principles that are involved, in order
to achieve the objectives that shall become a stable
foundation for further developments. Aware of this, the
king therefore hired many foreigners and employed them
in various governmental department positions. In 1906,
there were altogether 44 foreign advisors and 247 foreign
employees delegated to different ministries; of these, 126
were British.
Notable foreigners employed in the field of art and
architecture were European architects Joachim Grassi,
who served in the Department of Public Works since
1900 and later became Chief Architect in 1910, and
