บ้านเรือนถิ่นไทยในช่วงเจ็ดทศวรรษ 2489-2559

สมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ตอนต้น (รัชกาลที่ 1 - รัชกาลที่ 3
พ.ศ. 2325 - 2394) พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้า
จุฬาโลกมหาราชทรงสถาปนากรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ขึ้นเมื่อ
พ.ศ. 2325 การสร้างบ้านแปงเมืองยังยึดถือความรุ่งเรือง
ของอยุธยาเป็นต้นแบบ เช่น การสร้างพระราชวังและวัด
ในวังตามประเพณีอยุธยา บ้านพักอาศัยของสามัญชน
ก็ยังสร้างขึ้นตามประเพณีการสร้างเรือนไทยภาคกลาง
ที่ได้พัฒนาขึ้นมาตั้งแต่สมัยอยุธยา
โปรตุเกสเป็นชาติตะวันตกชาติแรกที่ได้อัญเชิญ
พระราชสาส์นเข้ามายังราชสำนักสยามในตอนต้นรัชกาล
เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2329 และพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวก็ได้
ทรงจัดพิธีต้อนรับอย่างสมเกียรติ ทั้งยังได้ส่งพระราชสาส์น
ตอบกลับไปอีกด้วย
ในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัย
ทางโปรตุเกสได้ส่งทูตเข้ามาขอเจริญสัมพันธไมตรีกับ
ไทยอีกใน พ.ศ. 2361 และใน พ.ศ. 2363 โปรตุเกสก็ได้
ขออนุญาตตั้งสถานกงสุลขึ้น ซึ่งไทยยินยอมด้วยไมตรี
นับเป็นการตั้งสถานกงสุลต่างประเทศเป็นครั้งแรกใน
สมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ นอกจากนี้แล้วการริเริ่มด้านการต่างประเทศ
ที่สำคัญในรัชกาลก็ได้แก่ การติดต่อทางเอกสารกับประเทศ
redeveloping the garden on the eastern section, known
as Suan Khwa, of the palace grounds along with the
construction of several brick buildings that were built later.
As far as dwellings of the commoners were concerned,
there is no clear evidence as to what they were like, but it
is possible to speculate that they were timber or bamboo
houses built on stilts as had been traditionally practiced
since the period of Ayutthaya.
Important religious building projects during the period
of Rama II were mostly those that had been initiated
since the previous reign such as the viharn of Wat Maha
Suthavas (Wat Suthat) for example. However, the Great
Prang of Wat Arun Rajvararam was initiated by Rama II
himself but unfortunately had yet to be completed at the
time of his passing away when only the foundation had
just been laid.
During the period of Rama III, Siam had signed the
first amity and commerce treaty with Britain on June 20,
1826. Known as the Burney Treaty, this was the first treaty
that Siam had signed with a western nation. However,

การสร้างพระราชมณเฑียรในพระบรมมหาราชวังนั้น
ได้ทรงมอบหมายให้พระเจ้าลูกยาเธอ กรมหมื่น
เจษฎาบดินทร์เป็นแม่กองจัดสร้างสวนขึ้นข้างหมู่
พระราชมณเฑียรทางด้านตะวันออกเรียกกันว่า
“สวนขวา” และได้มีการสร้างพระราชมณเฑียรและ
สร้างตึกขึ้นหลายหลัง สำหรับบ้านพักอาศัยของ
สามัญชนนั้น ไม่ปรากฏหลักฐานอ้างอิงที่ชัดเจน
แต่น่าจะยังคงสืบทอดวัฒนธรรมการอยู่อาศัยในแบบ
ประเพณีต่อจากสมัยรัชกาลที่ 1 คือเป็นบ้านเรือน
แบบเรือนไทยเดิมสมัยอยุธยานั้นเอง
สำหรับการสร้างวัดสำคัญในกรุงเทพฯ นั้น รัชกาล
ที่ 2 ได้ทรงสานต่อโครงการก่อสร้างที่ได้เริ่มขึ้น
ตั้งแต่สมัยรัชกาลก่อน เช่น การสร้างพระวิหาร
วัดมหาสุทธาวาส (วัดสุทัศน์เทพวรารามวรมหาวิหาร)
และได้ทรงมีพระราชดำริให้สร้างพระปรางค์ใหญ่ขึ้น
ภายในวัดอรุณราชวราราม แต่เมื่อเริ่มขุดดินวางรากฐาน
พระปรางค์ก็สิ้นรัชกาลเสียก่อน
ในรัชกาลพระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว
สยามได้เซ็นสนธิสัญญาเบอร์นีกับสหราชอาณาจักร
Siam’s most important trading partner at the time was
China with whom the king had established and enjoyed
trading relationship since he was still Prince Jessada
Bodindra and served as Minister of Trade and Foreign
Affairs during his father’s reign.
Apart from trading with China, Rama III also developed
a personal taste for Chinese art and as a consequence,
Sino-Thai architectural style became the royal vogue
during his reign. This can be seen for example, from Wat
Raj-Orosaram, the temple that he had restored while serving
as Minister of Trade and Foreign Affairs during the period
of Rama II which later became accorded to his reign after
he had ascended the throne. With regards to temples, the
king, being a highly religious person, had built and restored
altogether 44 temples, which is considered to be a rather
great number compared to that of the previous two reigns.
During the period of Rama III, American missionaries
who arrived and began to settle themselves in Bangkok,
built their houses in the colonial style with two storeys
surrounded by verandas. These houses were built of timber
