บ้านเดโช ข้าพเจ้าเป็นคนแถวสีลม ประโยคนี ้ในปัจจุบันหมายถึงอะไรได้หลายอย่าง เช่นคอนโดหรู ย่านธุรกิจ และราคาที่ดินสูงลิบ แต่เมื่อกว่าหกสิบปีก่อน ประโยคนี้ก็หมายถึงอีก หลายอย่าง ไม่ว่าจะเป็น โรงสีลม คลอง รถราง ป่าช้า ฝรั่ง วัดแขก (คือวัดพระศรีมหาอุมาเทวีในศาสนาฮินดู) ตลาดสด โรงเรียนกรุงเทพคริสเตียน และ โรงเรียนผดุง ดรุณี (เป็นโรงเรียนสตรีล้วน ปัจจุบันไม่อยู่แล้ว) เลยไป จนจดถนนเจริญกรุงอันเป็นถนนสายแรกของกรุงเทพฯ และบริเวณถนนเจริญกรุงนี้เองเป็นที่ตั้งโรงเรียน อัสสัมชัญและอาสนวิหารอัสสัมชัญ มีโรงแรมที่ได้ชื่อว่า ดีที่สุดในโลกแห่งหนึ่งริมลำน ้ำเจ้าพระยาคือ โรงแรม โอเรียนเต็ล (ปัจจุบันอยู่ในเครือโรงแรมแมนดาริน) แถวนั้นมีชุมชนย่านโรงภาษีเก่า เป็นชุมชนมุสลิม มี มัสยิดฮารูณเป็นศูนย์กลางของชุมชน อยู่ใกล้สถานกงสุล ฝรั่งเศสและโรงภาษีร้อยชักสาม (เรียกอีกชื่อหนึ่งว่า ศุลกสถาน) ใกล้มัสยิดฮารูณ มีกุโบร์คือ ที่ฝังศพของ ชาวมุสลิม MY DECHO HOME I was a Silom boy. This statement could mean a number of things: luxury condos, posh business area, and exuberant land price. But more than 60 years ago, this statement could mean something else completely. It could mean: windmill, canal, tram, Christian cemetery, Hindu temple, fresh market, Bangkok Christian College (for boys) and Padung Darunee (for girls-this school no longer exists.), all the way to New Road, the very first road in the capital. In this area stand Assumption Cathedral, Assumption College, the world-renowned centenarian Oriental Hotel (now belongs to the Mandarin Group). Next to the French Embassy lies an old Muslim community with Haroun mosque as its center, complete with Muslim burial ground. Most of my relatives including my mom, dad, and grandmother- who was born in the reign of King Rama V and lived to be 101, were laid to rest there. People used to call her: grandma Arun of Decho House. ในกุโบร์นั้นเป็นที่พ ำนักปัจจุบันของญาติพี่น้องข้าพเจ้า แทบทั้งตระกูลรวมทั้ง พ่อ แม่ และคุณยายซึ่งเกิด ในสมัยพระพุทธเจ้าหลวงและจากไปกว่ายี่สิบปีแล้วเมื่อ ท่านอายุได้ 101 ปี ครั้งคุณยายยังมีชีวิตอยู่ ญาติพี่น้อง ก็ล้วนเรียกหาท่านเป็น “คุณยายอรุณบ้านเดโช” “บ้าน” ในฐานะพื้นที่สังคมเมืองที่เต็มไปด้วยความ หลากหลายทางวัฒนธรรมแสนอัศจรรย์ที่ข้าพเจ้าเกิด เติบโต และ เล่าเรียนอยู่บนถนนเดโช จำได้ว่า เมื่อเด็กๆ เวลาวิ่งไปรับโทรศัพท์ และคน ถามจากปลายสายว่า “ที่ไหนจ๊ะ?” ข้าพเจ้าจะตอบว่า “บ้านเดโชครับ” เมื่อเล็กกว่านั ้นเคยถูกอุ้มไปเล่นที่บ้านตรงข้าม ผู้หลักผู้ใหญ่ในบ้านนั้นที่เป็น “หม่อม” เมตตาอุ้มเห่ เลี้ยง ดูข้าพเจ้าแต่เล็กแต่น้อย เมื่อไม่สบายก็ไปบ้านหมอที่ อยู่ตรงข้ามในสกุล “วิเศษกุล” เวลานั้นไม่รู้เลยว่าเดโชซึ่งเป็นถนนสายสั้นตัด ระหว่างถนนสุริวงศ์และถนนสีลมนั้นที่จริงเจ้าพระยา สุรวงศ์วัฒนศักดิ์ (โต บุนนาค) จัดซื้อที่ดินและตัดถนน ทั้งสองสาย ภรรยาท่านเจ้าคุณคือ ท่านผู้หญิงตลับ My “home”, as an urban space rich with fantastic cultural diversity, where I was born, bred and went to school, is on Decho Road. I remember that when I was a child and there was a telephone call asking “where is this, please?”, I would quickly reply “Decho House Krab.” When I was even smaller, someone would take me to play at a house across the road. I would be kindly cared for by a lady of the court and her family. When I was sick, my mom would take me to another gracious woman doctor from the house of “Viseskul”. At the time, I had absolutely no idea about the history of the short road connecting Suriwong on one side, and Silom on another. The land around was appropriated and two new roads came into being because of Chao Phraya Surawongwatanasak (Toe Bunnag). His wife, Lady Talabsiharajdecho went to ask for the names of these new roads from the then regent, Rama V’s Queen Sripatcharintra Boromrajineenart. Her Royal Highness gave the names: Surawong and Decho to them. 54
