แต่ผมคิดว่า economics มันบังคับ จำนวนประชากรเพิ่ม
พื้นที ่ลดลง ราคาที่ดินสูง ก็เลยต้องบีบให้เป็นอย่างนี้
อีกตัวอย่างคือ เครื่องบิน แทบไม่มีเครื่องบินสายการ
บินไหนที่แยกห้องน้ำชายหญิง ห้องน้ำบนเครื่องบิน
ซึ่งเป็นวัตถุโมเดิร์นเป็น unisex มานานแล้ว ไม่ใช่เพราะ
postmodernism แต่เหตุผลคือพื้นที่มันจำกัด เขาต้องใช้
พื้นที่ในการตั้งเก้าอี้ขายผู้โดยสารมากกว่า ดังนั้นเขาจะ
แบ่งห้องน้ำตาม class ไม่ได้แบ่งตามเพศ เพราะฉะนั้น
ในทางกลับกันสิ่งที่เรียกว่า postmodern conditions ใน
คริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 21 อาจจะไม่เหมือนกับ postmodern
conditions ในอดีต เพราะอาจเป็นเงื่อนไขที่จำเป็นใน
การอยู่กับ resources ที่จำกัด
อาจารย์กิจโชติ: มาถึงคำอีกคำที ่มีความน่าสนใจ
คือคำว่า geography ครับอาจารย์ จากที่อาจารย์
อธิบายในเรื่องต่างๆ มาตั้งแต่ต้น มันมีคำว่าภูมิศาสตร์
geography ขึ้นมาหลายๆ ครั้ง เหมือนที่อาจารย์เพิ่ง
จะกล่าวถึง transcend geography ซึ่งจริงๆ แล้วคำว่า
geography มันเหมือนมิติๆ หนึ่งที่เป็นฐานรองรับของ
นัยยะต่างๆ ที่มันเคลื่อนตัวอยู่บนนั้น ในเชิง geography
อยากจะขอให้อาจารย์อธิบายเพิ่มเติมในมุมมองของ
อาจารย์ในเชิงรัฐศาสตร์ว่า geography เวลาที่คำคำ
นี้ถูกใช้ในเชิงรัฐศาสตร์แล้วมันกินความหรือมีนัยยะที่
สำคัญอย่างไรครับ

เป็นวิชา ซึ่งเกิดขึ้นเพราะมีความจำเป็นสำหรับการ
วัด space เป็นการวัดภาพของพื้นโลก ทำอย่างไร
ถึงจะวัดภาพของพื้นโลกได้ก็เลยเกิดมาเป็นวิชานี้ ซึ่ง
geography เองก็เปลี่ยน สมัยก่อนเวลาพูดถึง geography
มักเอาส่วนย่อย (subset) ของ geography มาเป็น
เรื่องหลักที่เรียกว่า cartography คือศาสตร์ของการทำ
แผนที่ แต่แผนที่เป็นเทคโนโลยีอันหนึ่งสำหรับการวัด
เพื่อแสดงออกว่า geography เป็นแบบนี้ ณ วันนี้มันเลย
ไปแล้ว เท่าที่ผมเข้าใจยุคนี้หลายแห่งเน้นในสิ่งที่เรียก
ว่า human geography กลายเป็นอีกอย่างหนึ่ง เมื่อ
ก่อน geography เป็นเรื่องของความลึกของชั้น เป็น
ป่าเป็นเขาจะเน้นตรงนี้ แล้วมันก็คู่กับ history คือเอา
ภูมิศาสตร์กับประวัติศาสตร์มาอยู่ด้วยกัน ภูมิศาสตร์ทำ
กับ space ประวัติศาสตร์ทำกับ time แต่ตัววิชามันแปร
สภาพไปตามความรู้ ตามความเปลี่ยนแปลงของการรับรู้
other solutions. With less resources available as time
goes by, our choices are more and more limited.
Land has become much more expensive and there’s
less space for everyone. I think there’s a chance that
public buildings in the future will have communal
toilets for both men and women. And I don’t think it’s
because of the postmodern trend but more because
of economics. Increase of population, decrease of
space, and scarcity of land are driving factors. When
you fly, no airplanes offer separate toilets for men
and women. Airplane toilets have always been unisex,
and not due to the postmodern movement but the
limited space on the plane. They need that space for
seats. So the airplane industry categorizes toilets in
the sky based on class, and not gender. I think that
postmodern conditions in the 21 st century is not the
same as those in the past anymore because one of
the conditions now is limited resources.
Quijxote: Another interesting issue is geography.
You mentioned this word a few times like the phrase
“transcend geography” that you used. Can you share
with us your opinion on how the term is used in
politico perspective?
Chaiwat: Again, I don’t categorize myself as
representative of “political perspective”. For me geography
is a subject that was born out of necessity: the need to
measure space of the earth for living and travel. Geography
has also gone through changes. In the old days, cartography
or the art of making maps was considered geography when
in fact it was just a subset of geography. But geography
has evolved so much since then. There are numerous kinds
of geography now like human geography. In the past, it
was about depth and layers. Forests are here, mountains
are there. And geography usually came hand-in-hand
with history. What geography did with space, history did
