และบทวิพากษ์ของตัววิชานั้นเอง วันนี้จึงมีผลต่อความ
เข้าใจ geography แบบ human geography ความคิดที่
กลับมาใหม่ อย่างในวิชารัฐศาสตร์สมัยก่อนเข้าก็สนใจ
ว่าประเทศจะมีทางออกทะเลหรือไม่ เขาเรียกว่าวิชา
ภูมิรัฐศาสตร์ ประเทศอยู่ตรงไหนของยุโรป สามารถคุม
ยุโรปได้หรือไม่ แต่ทุกวันนี้ของเหล่านี้ตายหมดเลยเพราะ
เทคโนโลยี เพราะขีปนาวุธข้ามทวีป เพราะฉะนั้นความ
คิดเดิมที่บอกว่าอยู่ตรงนี้แล้วไม่มีทางออกทะเลทำอะไร
ใครไม่ได้มันไม่ใช่อีกแล้ว เพราะฉะนั้น geography ใน
วันนี้สำคัญไหม สำหรับผมผมว่ามันสำคัญมาก เพราะ
ทำให้เห็นมนุษย์ในสภาพแวดล้อมที่ค่อนข้างจะ concrete
และ abstract ไปด้วยกัน เช่น แผนที่
อาจารย์กิจโชติ: จากที่เรียนสัมภาษณ์อาจารย์มา
ตั้งแต่ต้นครับ คำว่า space, geography นั้นมีมิติที่ใกล้
เคียงกันไม่ได้หลุดออกจากกันมาก
อาจารย์ชัยวัฒน์: แต่ไม่เหมือนกันเลย เพราะว่า
เรากำลังพูดถึงของ 2 อย่าง เรากำลังพูดถึง concept
(แนวคิด) และ discipline (สาขาวิชา) แต่ discipline ก่อ
กำเนิดตัวมาจาก concepts บางอย่าง แล้ว concept
นี้ในโลกโมเดิร์นหรือโลกฝรั่งเราสามารถย้อนกลับไปได้
ว่าเริ่มมาอย่างไร ผมคิดว่ามันเริ่มที่ อิมมานูเอล คานต์
เพราะคานต์แบ่งชุดความคิดของมนุษย์ออกเป็น 12 ชุด
2 ในนั้นคือ space และ time แล้วการแบ่งและความ
เข้าใจเช่นนี้ก็ให้กำเนิดความรู้จำนวนหนึ่ง ความรู้เหล่า
นี้เมื่อจัดระเบียบเป็นระบบสถาบันก็กลายเป็นสาขาวิชา
เช่น วิชาภูมิศาสตร์ เพราะฉะนั้น geography กับ
space จึงสัมพันธ์กันแน่ แต่ไม่ใช่สิ่งเดียวกัน
อาจารย์กิจโชติ: สิ่งหนึ่งที่ทำให้ผมรู้สึกว่ามันมีส่วน
เชื่อมโยงกันคือ geography กับ space มันสามารถทำให้
เราเห็นมิติ แล้วเราก็สามารถกำหนดเฟรมเวิร์คของเราได้
ว่ามิตินี้บนเฟรมเวิร์คของวิธีคิดแต่ละวิธีทำงานนั้นมัน
อยู่ตรงไหน มันเป็นอย่างไร มาถึงคำศัพท์อีกชุดหนึ่ง
ครับที่หลังๆ ผมมักจะย้ำในการเรียนการสอนอยู่เสมอ
นั้นคือ scale กับ positioning พอมันประกบกันทั้งหมด
มันก็สามารถสร้างเป็น method ขึ้นมาแล้วก็เห็นภาพ
ได้ชัดเจนว่า การกำหนด scale กับ positioning ของ
เราในการทำงานบน geography หรือ space นั้นปัจจัย
with time. But the subjects kept evolving based on new
knowledge, comprehension, and analysis. The result is new
understanding of geography. In the past when we studied
political science, we always considered if a country is or
is not landlocked? Where is it located in Europe? Does
the country’s location allow it to be a powerful nation in
the area? This is called geopolitics. But all of that is now
obsolete because of technology. Cross-continent missiles,
among other things, changed the whole scenario, including
the military balance of power. I think geography is very
important because in geography, we see people in both
concrete and abstract environments.
Quijxote: From what you said, it seems like space
and geography are not that far apart from each other.
Chaiwat: Yet very different. We’re talking about
2 separate things, concept and discipline. Disciplines
derived from concepts. In western philosophy, tracing the
origin of concept back to Immanuel Kant, he identified
12 categories as conditions for human cognition, 2
of which are space and time. This characterization
predicated sets of knowledge that once organized and
institutionalized, became disciplinary subjects. And
geography is one of them. So geography is definitely
related to space, but not the same thing.
Quijxote: I feel that geography and space are related
because they both allow us to see dimensions and define
framework of the thinking process and working method.
Another set of words that I reiterate a lot to my students
is scale and positioning. By specifying scale and work
positioning, we will clearly see where we are and the
environment around us. Is it similar to your work method?
Chaiwat: Very similar indeed. If we want to propose
