was starting to flourish in the West, then adapted it
to the tropical climate and the westernised living.
Rooms were incorporated into a compact house and
the utility space started from the ground floor like
western and Colonial houses.
At this period of time, clay tile roofs and
overhanging eaves were still the main characteristics
of buildings and houses. One significant change was
the new roofing material which won its popularity over
cement tiles--the concrete tiles. With the mixture of
cement, sand, stones and water, concrete was
stronger than cement. Concrete tiles required high
technology to manufacture and were first imported
to Thailand after the WWII early in the reign of King
Rama IX.
In the West during the early 20th century, these
concrete tiles were known as Monier tiles. Produced
by Monier Company in Australia which was named
invented the reinforced concrete, these tiles were
called Wiboonsri tiles after the name of the importing
company in Thailand.
In terms of form, concrete tiles were different from
those made of clay, Eternit, and cement, which were
developed from the same concepts and styles. Both
concrete and cement consisted of cement, sand, and
water. However, stones which were added to concrete
mixture made the difference. Concrete tiles were
therefore made into 15 mm thick and coluld be
manufactured in the size of 30x45 cm. The enlarged
size helped protect rainwater from leaking through
the gaps between the installed tiles. Moreover, instead
of having a flat surface, the small curves of Wiboonsri
tiles encouraged the drainage of rainwater and
reduced the leakage caused by the overflow. For that
reason, the roof pitch could reach as low as 20
degrees.
