บ้านเรือนถิ่นไทยในช่วงเจ็ดทศวรรษ 2489-2559

ลายค่อนข้างละเอียดแสดงถึงคุณภาพและความชำนาญ
ของช่างไม้ท้องถิ่น
อนึ่งการสร้างบ้านไม้สองชั้นโดยทั่วไปแบบเรียบง่ายที่
ไม่มีการตกแต่งด้วยลวดลายไม้ฉลุนั้นไม่ปรากฏหลักฐาน
ที่จะทำให้ทราบถึงช่วงเวลาที่ชัดเจนในการก่อสร้าง
ว่าสร้างขึ้นก่อน หลัง หรืออาจจะสร้างขึ้นในช่วงเวลา
ใกล้เคียงกันกับบ้านไม้ฉลุลาย อย่างไรก็ดีบ้านไม้ฉลุลาย
ของชนชั้นสูงนั้นย่อมมีความสะดุดตา และย่อมเป็น
แรงจูงใจให้มีการเลียนแบบได้มากอย่างแน่นอน และ
การที่สามัญชนนิยมสร้างบ้านไม้ฉลุลายแบบตะวันตก
เลียนแบบบ้านของชนชั้นสูงนั้น ก็เป็นการสนองพระราช
ปณิธานในพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวที่
ทรงมีพระราชประสงค์ให้คนไทยทุกคนจัดระเบียบบ้าน
เรือนของตนตามแบบอย่างที่พระราชวงศ์และขุนนางชั้นสูง
ได้ทำตัวอย่างนำร่องเอาไว้ เพื่อเป็นเครื่องหมายของ
ความทันสมัยและความเจริญของสังคมไทย
การที่งานสถาปัตยกรรมแบบตะวันตกเข้ามามี
บทบาทในการปรับตัวเข้าสู่ความทันสมัยของสังคมไทย
ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 นั้น ที่จริงเป็นการคุกคามต่อวิถี
ทางวัฒนธรรมเชิงประเพณีของไทยโดยตรง พระบาท
Rama V. Because of this, the general public were able to
admire his elaborately decorated mansion which would
have inspired many people to imitate the style and consequently,
led to its popularity which became widespread
among the commoners.
Apart from Bangkok, the popularity of the Gingerbread
style also spread to the northern part of the country around
1892 - 1897. Wongburi Mansion in Phrae province for
example, was ordered built in 1897 by Maechao Buatha
Mahayotpanya, the first wife of Chaoluang Phiriya
Dhepavongse who was the last ruler of Phrae. Using
Cantonese builders from China to undertake the work
assisted by local craftsmen, construction was completed
in 1900. This large western style two-storeyed mansion
was painted pink and decorated with sawn-timber detailing
for ventilation openings as well as along roof edges. The
perforated sawn-work with floral design patterns were
highly intricate and exhibited the skilled craftsmanship of
the local artisans.
As far as the plain two-storeyed timber houses without

แบบประเพณีของไทยจะดำรงอยู่ได้ในสังคมไทย
สมัยใหม่นั้นจะต้องมีการปรับตัว ฉะนั้นจะเห็นได้ว่าการ
สร้างพระอารามสำคัญในรัชกาลนั้นจะมีลักษณะที่เป็นงาน
แบบไทยประเพณีผสมผสานกับองค์ความรู้ทางการช่าง
ของชาวตะวันตก เช่น วัดราชบพิธสถิตมหาสีมาราม
ราชวรวิหาร วัดเบญจมบพิตรดุสิตวนาราม และวัดราชาธิวาส
เป็นต้น
วัดราชบพิธสถิตมหาสีมารามราชวรวิหาร สร้าง
เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2412 เพื่อเป็นวัดประจำรัชกาลที่ 5 นับเป็น
พระอารามหลวงสุดท้ายที่สร้างขึ้นตามประเพณีนี้ และ
ได้โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้จัดองค์ประกอบของผังเชิงประเพณี
อย่างสมบูรณ์ โดยการสถาปนาพระมหาเจดีย์เป็นหลัก
และห้อมล้อมด้วยพระระเบียงผังกลม พระอุโบสถและ
วิหารทิศ ลักษณะโดยทั่วไปเป็นแบบไทยประเพณีแต่
ภายในพระอุโบสถนั้นตกแต่งเป็นแบบคล้ายนีโอโกธิค
โดยออกแบบให้ผนังด้านบนระหว่างช่วงเสามีลักษณะ
เป็นทรงโค้งยอดแหลม เพดานตกแต่งด้วยลวดลาย
the decorative sawn-work are concerned, there is no clear
evidence as to whether they appeared before, after, or
around the same time as those built with the elaborate
ornamentations. Nevertheless, the ornately decorated
houses of the upper-class were undeniably more attractive
and desirable. The fact that commoners chose to imitate
the western style houses of the elite was in effect, also
to comply with the king’s mandate to create orderliness.
They therefore beautified their dwellings by following model
examples of the nobilities and aristocrats in the process
of modernization so as to help present an image of being
a developed society.
Because western style architecture played such
an important role in the modernization process during
the period of Rama V, it also posed a direct threat to
traditional culture and way of life. Aware of this, the king
was concerned that traditional Thai style architecture
would eventually disappear altogether. To overcome such
predicament, his opinion was that in order for traditional
skills and craftsmanship to survive, stylistic adaptations
