บ้านเรือนถิ่นไทยในช่วงเจ็ดทศวรรษ 2489-2559

ทรงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างถนนขึ้นหลายสาย แต่ที่สำคัญคือ
ถนนเยาวราช เนื่องจากเป็นถนนที่ตัดผ่านตำบลสำเพ็ง
ซึ่งเป็นชุมชนธุรกิจที่คึกคักของกรุงเทพฯ และยังคง
ความสำคัญมาตลอดจนกระทั่งสมัยปัจจุบัน
สถาปัตยกรรม
งานสถาปัตยกรรมในยุคการปฏิรูปในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5
นั้นมีความหลากหลาย เพราะว่ามีประโยชน์ใช้สอย
แบบใหม่มากมายเกิดขึ้นมาพร้อมกับการปฏิรูป เช่น
ศาลากลางจังหวัด ศาลยุติธรรม สถานีรถไฟ โรงเรียน เป็นต้น
ส่วนรูปแบบนั้นพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว
ยังทรงยึดแนวทางที่สมเด็จพระราชบิดาได้ทรงเริ่ม
วางแนวทางเอาไว้คือ การแสดงภาพความเป็นผู้เจริญ
และทันสมัยผ่านทางงานสถาปัตยกรรมแบบตะวันตก
หากแต่งานสถาปัตยกรรมแบบตะวันตกในสมัยรัชกาล
ที่ 5 นั้น เป็นงานที่มีคุณภาพและมีความถูกต้องทาง
หลักการออกแบบมากกว่าในสมัยรัชกาลก่อน ทั้งนี้เพราะ
ว่าผู้ออกแบบนั้นเป็นสถาปนิกที่ได้รับการฝึกฝนเฉพาะทาง
มาเป็นอย่างดี ในส่วนของอาคารพักอาศัยแบบตะวันตก
นั้นในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 ก็มิได้จำกัดวงอยู่แต่เพียง
พระราชมณเฑียรเท่านั้นแต่ได้เริ่มขยายวงกว้างออกไป

As far as roads were concerned, during the early period
of his reign, Rama V gave importance to maintenance of
roads within the city walls such as improving the old Bumrung
Mueang and Fueang Nakorn roads for example, and the
construction of five new ones which were Chakrabongse
Road, Phra Ar-thit Road, Phra Sumeru Road, Chakrapetch
Road, and Mahachai Road. Then around the middle of the
reign between 1884 and 1896, with the country’s improved
fiscal status, the king commanded more and wider roads
be built such as the ring road that runs parallel to the
inner side of the city wall until it reaches the Front Palace.
Apart from that, linkage roads were built to direct city
growth out in various directions. To the east, Sa Pathum,
Nanglerng, Baripat, and Prajaejeen (Phetchaburi) roads
were built. To the north, there were Samsen and Krung
Kasem roads; and to the south, several roads were also
constructed, but the most important one was Yaowarat

ทรงมีพระบรมราชโองการให้พระราชวงศ์และข้าราชการ
ชั้นผู้ใหญ่ทำตัวเป็นแบบอย่างโดยการจัดบ้านเรือนให้เป็น
ตัวอย่างแก่ราษฎร เพื่อแสดงว่าคนไทยมีความคิดและ
ความเป็นอยู่ทัดเทียมกับความเจริญของประเทศในยุโรป
ด้วยเหตุดังกล่าวสมาชิกในพระราชวงศ์และข้าราชการ
ชั้นผู้ใหญ่จึงเป็นคนไทยกลุ่มแรกที่ได้ดำเนินการ “จัดบ้าน
เรือน” ให้เป็นระเบียบและงดงามในแบบสถาปัตยกรรม
ตะวันตกเพื่อให้เป็นไปตามพระราชประสงค์
พระราชวัง
การสร้างพระราชมณเฑียรตั้งแต่ต้นรัชกาลนั้น
พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวได้ทรงเลือกใช้
สถาปนิกอาชีพชาวยุโรป และพระที่นั่งองค์ที่สำคัญที่สุด
ในพระบรมมหาราชวัง เนื่องจากเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของ
พระมหากษัตริย์คือ พระที่นั่งจักรีมหาปราสาทนั้นก็ได้
ทรงมอบหมายให้นายจอห์น คลูนิส สถาปนิกชาวอังกฤษ
เป็นผู้ออกแบบ พระที่นั่งองค์นี้สร้างขึ้นใน พ.ศ. 2419

Architecture
During the reformation period under the reign of
Rama V, a range of architectural styles appeared due to
the variety of new functional requirements that came with
reform. These were the city hall, the justice court, railway
stations, and schools for example.
Regarding style, the king adhered to his father’s concept
of expressing the kingdom’s civilized and modern outlook
through Western style architecture, but emphasized more
on quality and design according to correct architectural
principles because the designers at the time of his reign
were professionally trained architects.
Western style residential buildings during the period
of Rama V were no longer confined to royal compounds,
as the king wished for all Siamese people to improve their
living conditions and make their houses architecturally
nicer looking by using modern and more durable building
