สถาปัตยกรรม
พระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวนั้นทรงติดต่อ
ค้าขายกับจีนโดยการส่งเรือสำเภาไปค้าขายกับจีนตั้งแต่
ครั้งยังว่าการกรมท่าสมัยรัชกาลที่ 2 และทรงมีความสน
พระราชหฤทัยในงานศิลปะแบบจีนมาตั้งแต่นั้น งาน
สถาปัตยกรรมสำคัญในสมัยนี้จึงมีงานสถาปัตยกรรม
ที่ผสมผสานศิลปะแบบจีนเข้ามาด้วยเรียกว่า งาน
สถาปัตยกรรมแบบพระราชนิยม เช่น วัดราชโอรสาราม
ซึ่งได้ทรงบูรณะขึ้นตั้งแต่ครั้งดำรงพระอิสริยยศเป็น
พระเจ้าลูกยาเธอในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 2 และต่อมาได้รับ
การสถาปนาเป็นวัดประจำรัชกาลในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 3
นอกจากการสถาปนาวัดประจำรัชกาลแล้ว
พระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวยังได้ทรงสถาปนา
พระปรางค์ใหญ่ที่วัดอรุณราชวราราม ซึ่งสมเด็จพระ
ราชบิดาได้ทรงเริ่มวางรากฐานไว้ และได้ทรงสร้างต่อ
จนเสร็จสมบูรณ์ใน พ.ศ. 2385 ส่วนวัดมหาสุทธาวาส
ซึ่งดำเนินการก่อสร้างมาตั้งแต่สมัยรัชกาลที่ 1 และ
รัชกาลที่ 2 นั้น ก็โปรดให้ดำเนินการก่อสร้างจนแล้ว
เสร็จสมบูรณ์ใน พ.ศ. 2390 และพระราชทานนามว่า
“วัดสุทัศนเทพวราราม” นับเป็นการสนองพระเดชพระคุณ
government learned that Burma had surrendered to the
British as a result of the first Anglo-Burmese War. Siam
therefore resolved that she had no choice but to concur
with the proposed terms of agreement. Thus on June 20,
1826, both parties officially signed the Treaty of Amity
and Commerce which was the first treaty that Siam had
entered into with a foreign country.
The first British trader to come to Siam during the
early period of Rama III was an Englishman of Scottish
descent named Robert Hunter who arrived in 1825 and set
up a retail store in the Kudeejeen area, selling imported
goods which Siamese people found very novel at the time.
The store called Haang Huntrae (Hunter) by the locals,
could be viewed as the pioneer of future department store
businesses that subsequently flourished in Bangkok.
Hunter was also the person who introduced the Siamese
Twins to the American public and made them famous in
the Western world.
Apart from signing the treaty with Britain, Siam also
entered into an agreement with the United States when,

พระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวนั้นทรงมี
ความมุ่งมั่นในความเป็น “พระมหาธรรมิกราชา” และ
ทรงสร้างและปฏิสังขรณ์วัดในรัชกาลเป็นจำนวนทั้งสิ้น
ถึง 44 วัด ทั้งยังทรงสนับสนุนให้สมาชิกในพระราชวงศ์
ตลอดจนขุนนางชั้นผู้ใหญ่สร้างวัดเพื่อเป็นพุทธบูชา
ซึ่งในส่วนนี้มีจำนวนวัดทั้งสิ้นประมาณ 30 วัด ดังนั้น
จึงเป็นรัชกาลที่มีการสร้างวัดขึ้นเป็นจ ำนวนมากเมื่อเปรียบ
เทียบกับสองรัชกาลที่ผ่านมา สำหรับตำหนักของเจ้านาย
ที่ทรงให้สร้างขึ้นในแบบตะวันตกนั้นได้แก่ตำหนักใหญ่
วัดบวรนิเวศวิหาร ซึ่งเป็นที่ประทับของท่านวชิรญานภิกขุ
(รัชกาลที่ 4) ขณะดำรงตำแหน่งเจ้าอาวาสอยู่ที่วัด
ดังกล่าว ตำหนักหลังนี้เป็นอาคาร 2 ชั้น โครงสร้างก่ออิฐ
ตรงกลางมีระเบียงมุข ตกแต่งด้วยลวดลายไม้ฉลุ
บริเวณหน้าจั่ว
ชาวตะวันตกที่เข้ามาในกรุงเทพฯ ในสมัยรัชกาล
ที่ 3 นั้น นอกจากนักการทูตซึ่งเข้ามาติดต่อราชการ
และพ่อค้าแล้ว ก็ยังมีชาวตะวันตกที่เข้ามาเพื่อเผยแผ่
in 1933, President Andrew Jackson appointed Edmund
Roberts as the first United States ambassador to negotiate
the signing of an agreement on friendship and trade with
Siam. The negotiations went well and Siam agreed that
the United States could set up a consulate should there
be a prior one set up by another country.
Architecture
Having sent junk boats to trade goods with China
when he was still prince and head of Maritime Trades
Department during his father’s reign, Rama III developed
a personal taste for Chinese art. This can be seen for
example, reflected in Wat Raj-Orosaram that he had
earlier restored during the reign of Rama II. After he had
ascended the throne, Wat Raj-Orosaram thus became
inaugurated as the monastic temple accorded to his reign
and consequently, Sino-Thai architecture became the royal
vogue during the period of Rama III.
The king also pursued the construction of the Great
Prang of Wat Arun Rajvararam (the Temple of Dawn) that
was initiated by his father, until its completion in 1842.
