Somerset Maugham
Thus Dusit Thani was therefore intended to reflect the
ideal image of a modern Siamese society.
While Dusit Thani presented the image of a modern
city with streets as the major means of communication,
the growth and development of Bangkok also reflected
the preference of the elite to use cars for transportation
rather than by means of waterways. The government
also gave more importance to road networks instead of
the maintenance of rivers and canals. The number of
automobiles in Bangkok doubled from 251 in the period
of Rama V, to 582 in the year 1912, while the number of
rickshaws that were popular among the people of Bangkok,
amounted to 2,698 vehicles by the beginning of the new
reign. The British writer W. Somerset Maugham who
came to Bangkok in 1925, expressed his opinion about
the capital city of Siam as being a “strange, flat, confused
city” but admired its colorful and strikingly exotic temples.
By “confused”, Maugham was probably referring to traffic
on the streets of Bangkok which was disorderly and on the
life. Specifically, the relaxed lifestyle, accustomed to living
with nature and relying on waterways as the major routes
for transportation, was in contrast with the modern urban
way of life that rely on roads as the main transportation
routes and require people to have discipline in addition
to having effective traffic control measures like those in
western countries.
Royal Palaces
In the design of palaces from the time of Rama VI
onwards, the site plan did not give importance to defining
the royal quarters and organizing spaces along the axes
as strictly as had been in the past since the time of Rama
I. Instead, there were more concerns with organizing
spaces according to their uses and orientating buildings
in appropriate directions with regards to the climate, so
as to provide functional ease and comfort.
Phayathai Palace was the most important royal
palace in the period of Rama VI and was the only palatial
compound to have architectural buildings with a certain
roof style to symbolize the monarchy.
