In 1847, Wat Maha Suthavas, under construction since
the period of Rama II as well, was also completed and
renamed Wat Suthat Dhepvararam. Essentially, this was
in answer to King Rama I’s wish to build a major temple
as a landmark and symbolic heart of Bangkok.
Determined to fulfill his role as a “righteous king”, Rama
III commissioned the construction and restoration of as
many as 44 temples during his time. He also encouraged
royals and high ranking officials to build temples as offerings
to the Lord Buddha. As a result, 30 more temples were
built. Thus the number of new temples during the period
of his reign increased considerably in comparison to that
during the periods of his two predecessors.
As for western style influence on residences of royalties,
a notable example is the residence of Phra Vajirayana
Bhikkhu (monkhood title of later King Rama IV) built while
he was the abbot at Wat Bovornives Viharn. The building
is a two-storeyed brick masonry building with a balcony
at the center and a gable roof decorated with perforated
sawn-timber work.
During the period of Rama III, Westerners that came
to Siam were not only emissaries and traders, but also
missionaries. Amongst them was a French priest named
Jean Baptiste Pallegoix who came to Bangkok in 1829.
Twelve years later, he was appointed by the Papal Office
as the first Apostolic Vicar of East Siam and was called
Sangkharaj (Patriarch) Pallegoix by the Siamese people.
Pallegoix was the person who introduced photography
to Siam in 1845 and having studied Thai and Pali, was
very fluent in both languages. In his journal, he gave a
description of Bangkok to the following effect 2 ....
“Bangkok occupies both sides of the riverbank 8
leagues from the sea. The city is shaped like an island
about 2 leagues wide and is surrounded by battlements
with forts at every corner. The capital sits amidst fertile
plantations that are lush and green all year round, making
it appear like a beautiful painting. Sailboats decorated with
flags are docked in rows along both sides of the river. The
pointed golden spire of the mondop and the magnificent
structure of the pagoda beautifully adorned with colorful
