International relations with the West
During the Ayutthaya period, Portugal was the first
western nation to sign a Pact of Friendship and Trade with
Siam in 1518. The two nations enjoyed mutual interests
in bilateral relations until the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767.
When the political situation during the early Rattanakosin
period became stable, the Portuguese once again were
the first to seek an opportunity to reestablish relationships
with Siam. In 1786, a Portuguese representative was sent
bearing royal correspondence from Lisbon to the Siamese
Court. After the Portuguese emissary had been received
with due honor and dignity, King Rama I graciously sent
his correspondence in return to the Portuguese Court.
British acquisition of Penang
On August 11, 1786, the British East India Company
had reached an agreement on leasing the island of Penang
from the Sultanate of Kedah. At the time, Penang was part
of Kedah Sultanate which was a tributary state of Siam.
The term of lease was quit-rent which meant that Kedah
would be under British military protection against external
occupied piece of land. The occupation of Penang by the
British East India Company was the first sign of British
threat to the political influence of Siam over Northern Malay
Peninsula which eventually during the early 20 th century,
or around the end of the reign of King Rama V, the entire
Malay Peninsula became a British colony and part of her
Commonwealth.
King Phra Buddha Loetla Nabhalai (Rama II) reigned
from 1809 to 1824 when the political situation in the kingdom
was considered to be relatively peaceful. Siam engaged
in only one war with Burma during the beginning of the
reign when Burmese troops invaded several southern
provinces such as Takua-Pa, Takua-Tung and Thalang,
among others, just two months after the king’s coronation
in 1809. Siam however, was able to force the Burmese to
retreat and the situation hence became more peaceful.
The atmosphere of peace allowed Rama II to spend
more time on his personal passion in the arts which he was
