Preface
Fishing, one of man's oldest occupations, is an economic sector which has continued to
grow in importance in the European Community, especially since the accession of Sbain
and Portugal.
The fishing industry possesses such a richness and diversity of vocabulary that confusion
frequently results, and politicians, specialists and decision-makers, as well as translators
and interpreters, find themselves confronted with difficulties arising from the lack of a
reliable, standardized terminology. Whether it be fixing catch quotas, agreeing on
permitted fishing techniques or establishing measures for the epnservation of fish stocks,
it is essentialto speak a'common'language.
Directorates-GeneralV (Employment, Industrial Relations and SocialAffairs) and XIV
(Fisheries) are well aware of the problems and, in an efiort to surmount them, asked the
Terminology Unit of the Translation Service to compile glossaries of specialized
terminology covering various aspects of the fishing industry. The aim of the project was to
achieve a certain degree of standardization in the use of terms, taking into account the
richness of the language in this particular field, without however adopting the innumerable
regional or local variations.
This is a considerably enlarged and updated edition of the Frbhing gearglossary
published by the Publications Office in 1987, and is one of a series of terminological
works devoted to fishing, the others being Fbhlhg yesse/s and safety on board and
Aquatic anirmls Aquatic and anirmls plants.plants.

The use of these glossaries of fishing terminology, complete with illustrations, will
henceforth enable those involved in the fishing industry, politicians, translators and
interpreters, and even the general public, to employ a correct
'common' language.
