Educational Needs Of Families In Turkey<br />

test area.<br />

Family, which is one of the main components of the social life, is an economic and<br />

social institution made up of mother, father, children and blood relationships of the<br />

parties. Due to its vital quality family ranks first among social institutions. This is because,<br />

one of the duties of the family is to reproduce and maintain human kind. Another<br />

reason for family’s becoming a social institution is role, which it plays in<br />

socialization of the child. In this way, family takes a <strong>ve</strong>ry great part in generating,<br />

bringing up and protecting the child and ensuring acceptance of the child into society.<br />

As a result of its biological, sociological and psychological structure, family performs<br />

many duties such as meeting individual and social needs like sexual intercourse, reproduction,<br />

protection and sheltering, loving and being lo<strong>ve</strong>d, sharing lo<strong>ve</strong>, being dependent<br />

and independent, belonging, obtaining a status, reliance, self-realization, care and<br />

education of children, transfer of social customs and ideals and acquired goods and<br />

knowledge to new generations. Basic functions of the family are regulated by society.<br />

These duties can be collected under fi<strong>ve</strong> titles:<br />

1. Biological duty, which protects existence of the family and ensures the<br />

continuance of the generation.<br />

2. Economical duty, which meets all sorts of material needs of the family members.<br />

3. Protection duty, which protects family members against all sorts of material<br />

and spiritual damages.<br />

4. Psychological duty, which provides opportunity for de<strong>ve</strong>lopment of emotional<br />

balance within family.<br />

5. Educational duty, which ensures training and socialization of family members.<br />

Family, which is an economic and social institution made up of mother, father,<br />

children and blood relationships of the parties, is at the centre of social life in terms of<br />

functions it achie<strong>ve</strong>s. Howe<strong>ve</strong>r, family that previously considered as centre of happy,<br />

harmonious and balanced life becomes distant to this outlook gradually as a result of<br />

the changes experienced in social life. Rise in divorce rates, increase in number of the
