7.3.6. Media<br />

Educational Needs Of Families In Turkey<br />

Opinions of the participants were asked under fi<strong>ve</strong> topics mentioned below with<br />

aim to determine families’ competence le<strong>ve</strong>ls and eagerness le<strong>ve</strong>ls for taking part in<br />

training with regard to media:<br />

1. Positi<strong>ve</strong> and negati<strong>ve</strong> influences of the media (newspaper, television, internet,<br />

radio) on family<br />

2. Influences of the media on child de<strong>ve</strong>lopment<br />

3. Benefiting from media as an information and news source<br />

4. Capability to cope with addiction of computer<br />

5. Capability to cope with addiction of TV<br />

Looking at family members’ rates of feeling themsel<strong>ve</strong>s competent in the matters<br />

relating to media, it is seen that topic in which participants’ rates of feeling themsel<strong>ve</strong>s<br />

competent are the highest is benefiting from media as an information and news source<br />

while topic in which participants’ rates of feeling themsel<strong>ve</strong>s competent are the lowest<br />

is capability to cope with the addiction of computer. Accordingly, families consider<br />

themsel<strong>ve</strong>s most incompetent in the topic of coping with the addiction of computer.<br />

Number of those eager for taking part in the trainings to be gi<strong>ve</strong>n in the topics re-<br />

lating to the media is equal to one fourth of the total number of the participants. Con-<br />

sidering participants’ potential of representing Turkey, this rate is <strong>ve</strong>ry significant.<br />

Examining rates of eagerness for taking part in the trainings to be gi<strong>ve</strong>n in the top-<br />

ics relating to the media generally, eagerness for taking part in the training relating to<br />

the each topic is more than the rate of those considering them incompetent in this<br />

topic. This is true for all of the topics except for the matter of capability to cope with<br />

the addiction of computer in which the rate of those feeling themsel<strong>ve</strong>s incompetent is<br />

higher compared to those wanting take parts in the training.<br />

The findings obtained from Chi-square analysis made according to variables such as<br />

gender, age and educational background are presented below:<br />

Gender. Examining the findings relating to family members’ eagerness for taking<br />

part in the trainings to be organized in the media topics concerning family members<br />

generally; it is re<strong>ve</strong>aled that female participants ha<strong>ve</strong> higher rates of eagerness for tak-<br />

ing part in trainings to be gi<strong>ve</strong>n in all of the topics relating to the media compared to
