Educational Needs Of Families In Turkey
Opinions of the participants were asked under five topics mentioned below with
aim to determine families’ competence levels and eagerness levels for taking part in
training with regard to media:
1. Positive and negative influences of the media (newspaper, television, internet,
radio) on family
2. Influences of the media on child development
3. Benefiting from media as an information and news source
4. Capability to cope with addiction of computer
5. Capability to cope with addiction of TV
Looking at family members’ rates of feeling themselves competent in the matters
relating to media, it is seen that topic in which participants’ rates of feeling themselves
competent are the highest is benefiting from media as an information and news source
while topic in which participants’ rates of feeling themselves competent are the lowest
is capability to cope with the addiction of computer. Accordingly, families consider
themselves most incompetent in the topic of coping with the addiction of computer.
Number of those eager for taking part in the trainings to be given in the topics re-
lating to the media is equal to one fourth of the total number of the participants. Con-
sidering participants’ potential of representing Turkey, this rate is very significant.
Examining rates of eagerness for taking part in the trainings to be given in the top-
ics relating to the media generally, eagerness for taking part in the training relating to
the each topic is more than the rate of those considering them incompetent in this
topic. This is true for all of the topics except for the matter of capability to cope with
the addiction of computer in which the rate of those feeling themselves incompetent is
higher compared to those wanting take parts in the training.
The findings obtained from Chi-square analysis made according to variables such as
gender, age and educational background are presented below:
Gender. Examining the findings relating to family members’ eagerness for taking
part in the trainings to be organized in the media topics concerning family members
generally; it is revealed that female participants have higher rates of eagerness for tak-
ing part in trainings to be given in all of the topics relating to the media compared to
