Educational Needs Of Families In Turkey
self-confidences, to increase knowledge and skills, which they need in development of
the children and to make particularly father involved in the educational program effec-
tively. In addition, informing and raising awareness of the parents about different as-
pects of the parenthood, enabling them to have skills in related matter and informing
them in the matter of their rights and responsibilities are among the purposes of the
educational programs.
Necessity of the family education programs is no longer discussed in our time; cer-
tain studies are conducted in order to develop and extend different family education
programs. Common point of these programs with different contents and topics con-
ducted under title of the family education is generally the fact that they have been ar-
ranged in order to give information and awareness about different topics about parent-
hood to participants. Besides, even though their main purposes are same, there are
family education programs, where different methods are used in practice. They can be
mentioned as family education at home, family education combined with child educa-
tion in pre-school institutions, family education in institutions, integrated child devel-
opment centres and family education conducted through press.
Various programs have been developed and conducted to meet educational needs of
the families in Turkey and various countries. Some of these programs are as follows:
Parent School (Turkey), Mother – Child Training Program For 0-4 ages (Turkey),
Mother – Child Training Project (AÇEP) (Turkey), From Family To Family Program
(United States of America), Early Childhood Period Development Program
(Ireland), Portage Project (Peru), House-based Project (Korea), HIPPY (Israel), Head
Start (United States of America), High/Scope (United States of America).
Family education refers to educational attempts to support family members and
family life for developing and strengthening family. In other words, family education
refers to offering educational and other practice opportunities through which family
members will acquire necessary information and skills in order to increase life quality of
the families.
An important purpose in family education is to prevent problems within the family.
Families can be educated about main matters, which can lead to problems in family
life. In this way, families can be provided with information and skills, which will make
