Educational Needs Of Families In Turkey<br />

contribution to families to o<strong>ve</strong>rcome these kinds of problems. In this way, problems<br />

can be pre<strong>ve</strong>nted within family to a great degree and an awareness le<strong>ve</strong>l in which prob-<br />

lems can be sol<strong>ve</strong>d without reaching serious dimensions can be formed.<br />

Examining the literature relating to educational needs of the families, it is seen that<br />

number of the scientific researches (Bergman, 1990; Canpolat, 2001; Güzel, 2006 Ak-<br />

taş, 1997) is <strong>ve</strong>ry few in our country. These studies, where analyses of the educational<br />

needs of the families in various fields were made, were at the micro le<strong>ve</strong>l, and general<br />

sur<strong>ve</strong>y method was used in these studies. These studies focused particularly on analyses<br />

of the educational needs of the families, whose children study mostly in pre-schools<br />

and primary schools. Noticing this deficiency, Council of Family organized by General<br />

Directorate For Family and Social Researches handled current situation in the matter<br />

of family education and emphasized that “in depth need analyses in this field” were not<br />

made (ASAGEM, 2008b: 41).<br />

Concept of need can be defined briefly as “gap between existing situation and<br />

situation desired to exist” (Şimşek, 2009: 90). Present civilized society focuses mostly<br />

on ways to meet these needs in addition to basic needs that are common for whole<br />

humanity. Different ways to meet common basic needs of the human being in different<br />

cultures can be attributed to educational purposes and processes (Varış, 1994: 137).<br />

Determination of the need constitutes an important part of the program de<strong>ve</strong>lopment<br />

studies. It is necessary to determine real need in order to see a need for preparing program<br />

and to meet this need in the most appropriate way. It is considered important to<br />

determine social and individual needs as well as needs relating to the matter, in need<br />

determination studies designed to make for this aim. To this end, answers must be<br />

sought for the following questions in need determination research:<br />

1. What are expectations and needs of the society?<br />

2. What are needs of the individual?<br />

3. What are needs relating to the matter?<br />

Some methods are used in determination of the educational needs or in<br />

distinguishing needs of first priority. E<strong>ve</strong>n though there are many kinds of them, most<br />

commonly used ones can be mentioned as document scanning, sur<strong>ve</strong>y, observation,<br />
