Educational Needs Of Families In Turkey
contribution to families to overcome these kinds of problems. In this way, problems
can be prevented within family to a great degree and an awareness level in which prob-
lems can be solved without reaching serious dimensions can be formed.
Examining the literature relating to educational needs of the families, it is seen that
number of the scientific researches (Bergman, 1990; Canpolat, 2001; Güzel, 2006 Ak-
taş, 1997) is very few in our country. These studies, where analyses of the educational
needs of the families in various fields were made, were at the micro level, and general
survey method was used in these studies. These studies focused particularly on analyses
of the educational needs of the families, whose children study mostly in pre-schools
and primary schools. Noticing this deficiency, Council of Family organized by General
Directorate For Family and Social Researches handled current situation in the matter
of family education and emphasized that “in depth need analyses in this field” were not
made (ASAGEM, 2008b: 41).
Concept of need can be defined briefly as “gap between existing situation and
situation desired to exist” (Şimşek, 2009: 90). Present civilized society focuses mostly
on ways to meet these needs in addition to basic needs that are common for whole
humanity. Different ways to meet common basic needs of the human being in different
cultures can be attributed to educational purposes and processes (Varış, 1994: 137).
Determination of the need constitutes an important part of the program development
studies. It is necessary to determine real need in order to see a need for preparing program
and to meet this need in the most appropriate way. It is considered important to
determine social and individual needs as well as needs relating to the matter, in need
determination studies designed to make for this aim. To this end, answers must be
sought for the following questions in need determination research:
1. What are expectations and needs of the society?
2. What are needs of the individual?
3. What are needs relating to the matter?
Some methods are used in determination of the educational needs or in
distinguishing needs of first priority. Even though there are many kinds of them, most
commonly used ones can be mentioned as document scanning, survey, observation,
