audible; I acted suddenly, and it came to pass. 4 I know that you are hard; your neck is
an iron sinew, and your forehead is bronze. 5 I reported to you of old; before it came
upon you, I made it audible to you. Do not say, `The idols did it for me,´ and do not
say, `The carvings and molten objects commanded me.´ 6 You heard all these things,
yet you did not know; instead, I have made audible to you from now on the new things
which are about to happen, yet you did not talk. 7 They are happening now, and not of
old; you did not hear of them in former days. Do not say, `Yes, I know them.´ 8 You
neither knew nor understood, nor did I open your ears from the beginning, for I knew
that you would be treacherous and would be called a lawless one even from the womb.
9 For the sake of my name I will show you my fury, and I will bring upon you my
glorious acts so that I may not eliminate you. 10 Behold, I have sold you, not for the
sake of silver; I rescued you from the furnace of poverty. 11 For my own sake I will do
this for you, because my name has been profaned; I will not give my glory to another.
12 Listen to me, O Jacob and the one whom I call Israel; I am the first, and I am
forever. 13 My hand founded the earth, and my right hand made the sky firm; I will call
them, and they will stand together. 14 All will be gathered and will listen. Who told them
these things? Since I loved you, I performed your will against Babylon, to take away the
seed of the Chaldeans. 15 I spoke; I called; I brought him and made his way successful.
16 Approach me and listen to these things. I did not speak in secret from the beginning,
nor in a darkened place of the land. A When it happened, I was there; now the Lord and
his Spirit has sent me forth. 17 The Lord who delivered you, the Holy One of Israel, says
this: "I am your God; I have shown you how you find the way in which you should go.
18 If you listened to my commandments, your peace would have become like a river and
your righteousness like a wave of the sea. 19 Your seed would have become like the
sand and the offspring of your belly like the soil of the ground. Even now you will not
be eliminated, nor will your name perish before me.
20 Come out of Babylon, you who flee from the Chaldeans; report the sound of
cheerfulness. Let this become audible; announce it to the end of the earth. Say, `The
Lord delivered his slave Jacob.´ 21 If they are thirsty, he will lead them through the
desert; he will bring forth water for them out of the rock. The rock will be divided,
water will flow, and my people will drink. 22 There is no rejoicing for the ungodly," says
the Lord.
Isaiah 49
1 Listen to me, you islands, and pay attention, you nations. "Through much time it
will stand," says the Lord. From the womb of my mother he called my name. 2 He set up
my mouth like a sharp sword and hid me under the shelter of his hand; he set me up
like a select arrow and sheltered me in his quiver. 3 He said to me, "You are my slave, O
Israel, and in you I will be glorified." 4 I said, "I labored in vain, and I gave my strength
for emptiness and for nothing. Because of this, my justice is with the Lord, and my toil
is before my God."
5 Now the Lord, who formed me from the womb as a slave for himself in order to
