HAGGAI 1 A
1 In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first of the month,
the word of the Lord was in the hand of Haggai the prophet: "Say to Zerubbabel son of
Shealtiel, of the tribe of Judah, and to Jesus son of Jehozadak, the high priest, 2 `Thus
says the almighty Lord: "This people says that the time has not come to build the house
of the Lord."´" 3 The word of the Lord was in the hand of Haggai the prophet: 4 "Is it
time for you to reside in your paneled houses, when this house lies desolate? 5 Now thus
says the almighty Lord: `Then arrange your hearts to consider your ways. 6 You planted
many things, yet brought in few. You ate, yet this did not result in satisfaction. You
drank, yet this did not result in intoxication. You put on clothes, yet did not become
warm in them. The one who collected payments collected them in a bag full of holes.´
7 Thus says the almighty Lord: `Lay it on your hearts to consider your ways. 8 Go up
on the mountain, cut timber, and build the house; I will be satisfied with it, and I will be
glorified.´ The Lord said, 9 `You looked for many things, yet there were few; they were
brought into the house, yet I blew them away.´ Because of this, thus says the almighty
Lord: `Because my house is desolate, and each of you hurries to his own house, 10 for
this reason heaven will hold back the dew and the earth will restrict its produce. 11 I will
bring a sword over the earth, the mountains, the grain, the wine, the oil, whatever the
earth produces, the men, the livestock, and all the labors of their hands.´"
12 Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, of the tribe of Judah, Jesus son of Jehozadak, the
high priest, and all the remnant of the people listened to the voice of the Lord their God
and the words of Haggai the prophet, since the Lord their God had sent him out to
them, and the people were afraid of the presence of the Lord. 13 Haggai, the messenger
of the Lord, B said to the people, "The Lord says, `I am with you.´" 14 The Lord raised
the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, of the tribe of Judah, the spirit of Jesus son of
Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of the remnant of all the people. They entered
and did work in the house of the almighty Lord their God 15 on the twenty-fourth day of
the sixth month in the second year of Darius the king.
Haggai 2
1 In the seventh month, on the twenty-first of the month, the Lord spoke by the
hand of Haggai the prophet: 2 "Now say to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, of the tribe of
Judah, to Jesus son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people,
3 `Which of you saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? As if it were
nothing before you. 4 Now be strong, Zerubbabel,´ says the Lord, `and be strong, Jesus
son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Let all the people of the land be strong,´ says the
Lord. `Take action, for I am with you,´ says the almighty Lord. 5 `My Spirit is stationed
in your midst; have courage.´ 6 For thus says the almighty Lord: `Once more I will
