you did not fear me. 12 I will also announce my righteousness A and your wicked acts,
which will not benefit you. 13 Whenever you cry out, let them rescue you in your
oppression. For all these the wind will take and the hurricane will carry away, but those
who hold on to me will possess the land and will inherit my holy mountain. 14 They will
say, `Cleanse the ways before his face, and pick up the hindrances B from the way of
my people.´"
15 Thus says the Lord Most High, who resides in the highest places forever (the Holy
One among the holy ones is his name, the Lord Most High resting among the holy ones,
giving patience to the faint-hearted and giving life to the broken-hearted): 16 "I will not
take vengeance on you forever, nor will I continually be wrathful with you, for the Spirit
will come out from me; I myself made every breath. 17 On account of sin, I grieved him
for a little while; I struck him, and I turned my face away from him. He was grieved,
and he went sullen on his ways. 18 I have seen his ways, and I healed him and
comforted him. I gave him genuine comfort, 19 peace upon peace to those who are far
and to those who are near." The Lord also said, "I will heal them. 20 The unrighteous will
thus be tossed like waves and will not be able to rest. 21 There is nothing for the
ungodly to rejoice over," said the Lord God.
Isaiah 58
1 "Cry out in strength and do not hold back; lift up your voice like a trumpet, and
declare their sins to my people and their lawless acts to the house of Jacob. 2 They seek
me day by day and covet knowing my ways, like a people which had performed
righteousness and had not abandoned the judgment of their God. They now ask me for
righteous judgment and covet drawing near to God, 3 saying, `Why is it that we fasted,
and you did not see? Why did we humble our souls, and you did not know?´ For in the
days of your fasts you find your own desires, and you sting all who are under your
hand. 4 If you fast for judgments and battles and hit a humble person with fists, why do
you fast for me like today so that your voice may be heard in shouting? 5 I did not
choose this fast and day for a man to humble his soul, not even if you should bend
down your neck like a chain link and spread sackcloth and ash underneath you; not
even in this way will you call a fast acceptable. 6 I did not choose such a fast," says the
Lord. "Instead, dissolve every conspiracy of unrighteousness, untie the knots of violent
contracts, send forth the bruised in liberty, and cancel every unjust account. 7 Break
your bread with a hungry person and lead the unsheltered poor to your house. If you
see someone naked, clothe him, and you will not overlook the domestic affairs of your
own seed. 8 Then your light will break forth like the morning, and your healings will
quickly spring up. Your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of God will
encompass you. 9 Then you will cry out, and God will listen to you; while you are still
speaking he will say, `Behold, I am present.´ If you remove from yourself the
conspiracy, the show of hands, and the complaining speech, 10 and give bread from your
soul to a hungry person and satisfy a humbled soul, then your light will spring up in the
